I'll never have a hardwood floor in my kitchen. Ever. It's easy to clean, durable, and doesn't warp, dent, whatever. Down here, many houses have tile in the wet areas, and for good reason. Dirty grout is simply solved by sealing with a good sealer and picking the right grout. For the life of me I don't know why people choose white grout. But even white grout will hold up if it is properly sealed.

Actually just bought a house with a linoleum floor in the living areas and hate it! I won't change it at this point though because we may rent it out at some stage and it wears better.
Wait..What? Who does that? It must look horrible and cheap!
The house I bought last summer and moved into last July, has engineered hardwood flooring in the kitchen. It looks beautiful and seems to require little attention other than an occasional sweeping. So far no scratches, dents, or water or food spills at all, but I'm sure it helps that I don't have kids or pets in the house.
I have tile in my country kitchen which consists of the work area, dining, attached laundry room, pantry and open office area. I considered tile in the adjacent family room but there is a natural and well defined separation of space so carpet was chosen instead, and I'm glad. The tile is just ok, it is the only thing that made sense outside of putting down hardwood throughout the entire house, and I don't like HW around water. I have thought about it as a future update though since I'm loosing my love of wall to wall carpeting and if it's just me living here I can keep things in good shape (kids are grown...yay).
If my kitchen was truly a separate area it would be sheet vinyl like I used in my bathrooms.
