We purchased a CB 2 years ago. We totally resided our home with new cedar siding! It was unbelievably expensive...but is now repainted in beautiful bungalow colors and looks simply AMAZING!
My experience with ServiceMagic has not been good. They don't necessarily refer contractors who have any experience with period or heritage home restoration.
The best source for qualified craftsmen might be your local historical or heritage society. Most localities with a lot of Arts & Crafts homes have some sort of Arts and Crafts association.
Failing that, try the Better Business Bureau for a referral.
We do a lot of heritage homes, and Hardie cemetitious materials work well. BUT, and its a big but, their planking is not sized for the 3" reveal common on older homes, so you waste a lot of material unless you rip the planks down. Ripping cement board is not for the faint of heart. Wear a respirator.
We resided part of our house with cedar lap siding. It was expensive, but looks nice. If you do use cedar, be sure to wait a year before you paint it. We waited only a few months before priming it and the paint is coming off. You need to let the cedar dry out a bit before painting.
As to durability, we have some cedar siding on our house that is over 150 years old. If I get 150 years out of our new siding, that will be durable enough for me.
