Central vac is great. You don't have to drag around a full vacuum. Just plug in and go! It is 10 times stronger then regular vacuums and cleaner for your home. Also, you don't have to worry about emptying out a vacuum bag and then getting all the dust all over the floor!!
Has anyone put a CV in after the fact. I had the option at building but could not swallow spending $5k. I would rather have a vac downstairs and keep one upstairs for the carpets. I have that now.

My gut feeling is that is would cost more to put one in after the fact if it could be done at all. If you are on a crawlspace, they may be able to do it on the first floor for you though.
I had heard if you ever manage to plug one, walls need to be torn apart to unplug it. Has anyone ever experienced that?
First off it is very rare that a central vacuum gets plugged, the hose is 30' at 1 1/4" and the pipe is 2". If it travels 30' at that diameter it will go through a 2" diameter. Second if it clogs there are many different ways to go about it, none involve ripping open walls.
