We just received our first newsletter since moving and I have to admit I was kind of surprised at the new "end-of-summer" pool schedule. The last day that all our community pools will be open is Labor Day.

With how flippin' hot it stays here in the Houston area, I was just wondering if that's a usual schedule around town. I've never lived in a community with pools so I really don't have an idea of the SOP as far as schedules. Is it a financial decision to close the pools right at Labor Day? I know that most (if not all) the pool staff/life guards were pretty young - probably HS or college-aged.

ETA: didn't finish my final thought...so the pool staff/life guards all go back to school as citizen_jane pointed out below.

I just checked, and apparently this is the norm. All of the community pools in Shadow Creek Ranch close for the season on Labor Day too.

I think it's because the lifeguards all go back to school.

You may find that pools that are heated for year round use will stay open on a somewhat limited basis past labor day. These pools usually support year round competitive swimmers.

I have found that pools generally close when school starts (as you said, because the lifeguards go back to school). I find it exceedingly lame! :P

It stinks that is for sure. Our one will be open on the weekends only till the end of Sept. When the kids were younger and not in school I would always get frustrated that the pool was closed and as stated it is still freaking hot out. Don't see why they can not find a college age kid who has classes at differ times.
