The best deterrent that I know is a shotgun, but most folks nowadays don't believe in doing that.

Man... with 3 oak trees, I have a couple of family squirrels living in my yards. The one year that I had peach tree and asian pear tree full of fruits, they took all the fruits down in 1 night! . The fruits were only golf ball size!

Once I have squashes and tomatoes, I'm going to cover the plants with a net. Do you think that it would be effective?

Quote from the article, link above...

"There are many garden problems that can be solved. And then there are squirrels. Squirrels win. Period. In addition, it has come to our attention thanks to the brave operators of the wonderful tongue-in-check website www.deadsquirrel.com, that the little tree rats are not just garden and bird feeder thugs; they are actually evil creatures with much higher aspirations: Nothing less than world domination.

Think about it: First they chew through your phone lines so you can't call for help. Then they chew through and sever the ignition wires in your car so you can't quickly escape. Then they send a Suicide Squirrel to leap on the nearest transformer and knock out power to your entire neighborhood. And then, when you are completely helpless, alone in the dark and cold, cut off from decent society, you discover that they have also been eating your stored food. Then you hear loud noises in the attic. No, it isn't pretty, my friend!"

Squash and zucchini grow well here, but they need A LOT of space. They get huge, and you also need to keep an eye out for vine borer. I always end up losing my squash to these bugs. Google it for more info.
Thanks for the tip about the cherry tomatoes. I'll try those. This is my first time with growing squash and cucumbers here.

I was so excited to move to Texas where I would have a much longer growing season than I did in Kentucky but I've found that it is much easier for me to grow stuff there than there because of the heat I guess. I keep trying though - people grow stuff here, so I know it's possible.

Note to newbie Texas gardeners: tomato blossoms usually don't pollinate when nighttime temps are above the low 70's, so hold off until it's time to set out fall tomato plants. Some years you'll get a pretty fair crop from those before Thanksgiving. Spring tomato plants do best when they're put in the ground early -- March, or April at the latest.
