I know one dude who always approach me about how tough it is being a black man and how us brothas should help another one out; than ask for money. I always cut him off with a quick "No" than keep it moving.

After spending time in Colombia and Brazil I don't feel nearly as much pity for the panhandlers here. Of course they really might be in a bad spot but they aren't half a meal away from starving to death either

Just last week I walked out of my office and was headed to the parking garage. Some scruffy guy about my age (mid 20's) came up to me and asked if he could use my cell phone real quick. I see him on the corner of Richmond and Montrose occasionally.

Anyways was kinda initiated bc there was a pay phone a block away but let him bc he said he would be quick. While he was dialing the number he asked if he could bum a smoke so I opened my pack and held it out to him and the sonofabitch took 2.

So whoever he was calling didn't answer but he went ahead and left a msg and it was at this time I realized he was calling his damn dealer. Big WTF.

So I am glaring at him as I take my phone back and he has the audacity to ask me for some change.

There's this homeless guy who is always under the 59 overpass at West Alabama. He's probably 50, black, and has a white beard and a leg wrap. He seems pretty much all-there, as far as I can tell, in stark contrast to most of the other homeless guys in the area.

One day I was looking for parking for the Breakfast Klub and had to do a u-turn just past the overpass. I pull up to the light, and he motions for me to roll my window down (from across the street). He smiles real big and then asks if I needed help getting onto 59 (as it's kind of tricky in that spot). I thanked him and said no, and he just smiled and waved and walked off, didn't ask for money or anything. I thought that was pretty nice of him.

Anyways, just thought I'd counter some of the homeless hate :P Most of them are pretty unpleasant to deal with, but he's a nice exception. I usually don't give homeless people money, but I do whenever I see him. Anyone know the guy I'm talking about?

I had a similar experience in the courthouse area of downtown a few years back. They had just installed new meters and I wasn't sure how they worked. As I am fumbling for payment and trying to read the directions an older homeless guy comes up ... as he approached, I must have gotten a nervous look, he put his hands up as he approached and said "don't be scared, I just want to help you with that meter" and he walked up and helped me with it. Afterward, I said thanks and he said you're welcome, have a blessed day and turned and walked away without asking for a thing.
