Houston, like every other city I have ever visited, is segregated as a result of self-segregation. In other words, people choose to live near other people like themselves because doing so makes them feel more comfortable. Obviously, income level is also a major, if not the primary, determinant of where people live.

Yep, it is just like high school all over again..where Hispanics sit with Hispanics....Asian people sit with Asian..White sit with white.... Black sit with black..in high school cafeteria. But it is deeper than that... interracial dating can be such a pain too... still get stink eyes here and there.

Funny thing... when when I ask some blacks about what it means as interracial.... apparently, a lot of them think it is simply dating white.. as if dating Hispanics / Asian are not considered as interracial enough.

If you want less segregation, try a Democratic states.. it is less problematic, but situation is just about the same. This is coming from my 10 years of living in Michigan and Washington states.

exactly. but we have full grown adults who do that until the grave. kinda sad.

I was guilty of it myself in high school to some extent.

Now I don't hang out with anyone, and I'm much happier. LOL.

That's because whites are still the predominant racial group in America and that's where many white Americans still to this day make the distinction and/or draw the line when it comes to interracial dating (whites and blacks dating each other). Think about it: you see white men dating Hispanics and Asians all the time (many of them seem particularly fond of Asian women) and most white folks don't even think twice about it. But let that same white guy bring a black woman home to the family for Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, or around his white friends, and I bet you most of them won't be nearly as nonchalant about it.

I've actually had the opposite experience. Most of my family is from Chicago and the northeast, and there seems to be more self-segregation there than in the south. You don't find neighborhoods primarily comprised of white sub-categories (Irish, Italian, Jewish, Polish, etc.) in the South, though they still exist in the northeast and cities like Chicago. I remember as a kid visiting my grandma and thinking how bizarre it was that the Italians, Irish, Russians and Polish all had separate Catholic churches.

This may happen in the suburbs but the inner city is pretty integrated. I went through HISD and people of all colors hung out with each other. There's just some people who prefer to self segregate but its honestly a small percentage.

Worst video ever. With all due respect, the lady's claim on inner loop segregation was based on the fact that we have the wards and the West Village?

While no place is going to be 100% integrated I think Houston is better than most for those that WANT to be integrated.

Washington state isn't nearly as diverse as Texas to have such a huge issue with segregation. Michigan is very segregated. Detroit is one of the most segregated cities in the nation. Houston is actually one of the most integrated cities in the nation but that's also due to a lack of zoning.

It's no such paradise in America with racial harmony. It's none period. Even the liberal democratic areas have the forms of segregation. Their's might seem more subtle then anything.

Also what they touched on in the video is pretty accurate. The burbs of Houston is actually where a big bulk of the diversity lies in Houston. It's pretty common to find any ethnic group in alot of the burbs. I live in Northwest Houston and even though the area I reside in is predominately black and hispanic. A couple of blocks over you see a good amount of every color on the same block. The Inner loop on a residential level is more segregated. But you could never tell because of course the inner loop is where majority of people who live in Houston go to play.

I agree. I am from originally Maryland, and I think there is more self segregation there, at least in the Baltimore area where I am from.
