Houston and a couple of other places, you mean. Rice and Macalaster are not equal.

I doubt many people from around the country would agree with you IMO

Guerilla .... the winters are a little cooler in Houston , but the other nine months of the year the weather is exactly the same in Miami hot and humid !!

I live North of Miami in Boca Raton and I travel to Houston extensively so I feel I am qualified to make this comment . Thanks

I'm sorry you've been given a bad hand here, jplotz, and I'm disappointed that Houston wasn't a good experience for you. Not every city is for everyone, and I understand your feelings. I'm here to tell you that I enjoy Houston and it's still a wonderful city with a lot of positive things to offer and I don't think it's that bad of a place, but then again, no city is perfect and no city will ever be perfect. Granted, a few streets need to be worked on and the traffic issues are being addressed. And, yes, it's become an international city, and with a melting pot like this, you're going to have a few changes in the culture, and with that come the challenges. That happens.

I wish you well in your future endeavors wherever you go. Thanks for at least giving Texas a chance.

[Wow, ten pages of responses in just four days!]

I lived in the Northeast for 15 years after immigrating from Taiwan. From my personal experience Rice is a lot more famous in the Northeast and around the world. Again I did say that this is my personal opinion only.

U.S. News has Rice as the 17th best University. Macalester is the 26th best liberal arts college. I personally believe Rice to be quite overrated, much like the University of Chicago.

17th and 26th is a huge disparity and we all know liberal arts colleges have competition, but definitely not as much as universities in the top tier let alone the top 20. Rice is definitely not overrated, in fact it's probably a little bit underrated--people come from just about everywhere to go there. Usually people tell me they're afraid of Rice because it's in a southern state.

This post concerns me. We are thinking of relocating to the Houston Burbs, and have children with asthma. Would this be a bad move if air quality is that POOR?
