I no longer live in Houston, but have a friend who works at the school tell me about this. I just can't even imagine.

Unfortunately this happens from time to time. About a year ago, another little girl was hit by a school bus as she rode her bike home. I believe this was in Pasadena. This was very sad also.

It's bad enough kids have to watch out for cars and such but to be hit by a school bus? Tragic.

Even more unfortunate is that I believe the news said that this was the second time this particular driver had hit a child within the last 6 years.

You know, before I started riding the bus to school I was taught not to cross a street in front of a bus.

I guess bus drivers (who cannot see a small child crossing immediately in front of a bus) are supposed to explain this to the kids now instead of their parents. Nobody I knew got hit by any buses.

You know it didn't phase me at first because I hear about it so much. Even while I read the article I wasn't phased. But then I saw that picture. I imagined what her brother felt (I would be devestated if my brother or sister died!). I looked at her picture. She is such a pretty little girl. I imagined having a 15 year old daughter. I can only imagine what her parents are feeling! I read where the children screamed when they saw the body on the ground. I can only imagine seeing my friend lying on the ground dead right in front of me.

My prayers are with everyone associated with this . . . I don't even know what to call it . . . tragedy (I guess).

I know as Americans we want to point the finger at someone so that justice can be served quickly, but let's just take some time to be thankful and, if you feel so led, reach out to this family.

I'm trying to find it again...but an article I read, retracted that statement and said she had hit a dog a few years back. And it was not in the school bus, but her private auto.

I thought all school buses these days had the long gate/arm that swung in front of the bus so if a child did go around it, she/he could at least be seen by the driver. Was this bus not equipped with that? I know that said they were checking to see if the drivers seat was adjusted properly.
That poor family

Looks like I should retract my statement! Front page of the chronicle this morning has her hitting a student in '07! Although they report it was not her fault. She's also had a few other accidents.

This is an unfortunate accident. But let this be a reminder that no one should ever cross in front of a bus. Their blind spots are like 15 feet out. Not only that, but traffic on the driver's side of the bus cannot see you until it's too late.
