That is a good example. Although MD is not a southern state, it is a Mid-Atlantic/Northeastern state. So DC has a NE and Southern state surrounding it. I wouldn't consider DC to be Southern. I feel it has more of a Northern feel and vibe, with a dash of Southern mix in there for flavor. LOL.

In these times; deep south is used more as geographical pinpoint moreso than to define a culture from my understanding. The deep south was racism, segregation, slavery, oppression and more. It's dead to me; we're all south now!
Ya know, somone on this thread I belive, or another, was saying how the U.S. will eventually become homogenous, which I hope doesn't happen. I hope the South maintains it's character forever!!

I agree. That would be so wack. Let the different regions hold on to their character. Now it will evolve, but no one should mistake the South for New England.

Why worry about whether Houston is "southern" or not? What does it matter? There's never going to be agreement here on this forum, but even if there was, what's the point?

Deep South is another way of saying Lower South. Lower South is different than Upland South, Western South, Mountain South, Gulf Coast South w/e. It's all Southern but there are different types of "South." I find East Texas as an extension of the Lower South or Deep South. I find Houston in culturally different than East Texas. Remember, most, if not all Texans believe Houston is not East Texas.

Somebody on Wiki said it best here.

This was the part of the South considered to be the "most Southern" of all.
This thread and many others on this forum wouldn't exist if everyone agreed that Houston was " a place that was looked at as a place where it's the most Southern place of all Southern places along with the rest of the lower South," and since Houston demographics has changed so much in the last 50 years, any spec of dilution right now is going to make it swing further away from it being strictly a Southern place.

That shouldnt matter. Every city with a large black population has many soul food places. BTW, I dislike the term soul food. It's Southern food with a name.

Whatever. The reason I asked is because it's obvious that Houston is filled with Mexican joints. Due to its large black population and southern location, I was just wondering did it have alot of soul food restaurants on the same scale as Birmingham, Atlanta, and other southern cities. Also, I've not heard of Houston being a place for great soul food.
