Funding was secured prior to the announcement. The bridge will be built near Cabell Huntington Hospital and will be part of the Paul Ambrose Trail for Health. I wish the picture was available because it looked very Nice.
At least one southern city is getting the ball rolling on making major strides in pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure. Now if Charleston could get with it a bit quicker, maybe cycling could start to take off in all of WV. I still would love to see a trail linking Huntington and Charleston as well as one from Charleston to Beckley. The former would be good for short- to medium- distance commuting and overall health while the latter would be a great scenic ride!
And I'm not saying this is at all feasible in WV, but this is just an overall cool idea. Maybe a mini version could be developed between Huntington and Charleston, or at least in Kanawha County.
I've heard a lot of talk about connecting Huntington and Charleston via bike path. I think the uncertainty lies in how best to do it. We can't do the rails to trail here because our railways are still heavily used. Something that follows Route 60 would likely be the best option but a share the road scenario isn't optimal. I hope it happens though.
Yeah, ideally you would have a route that followed by both the population centers and the river, but most of that ROW is taken by roads that would be difficult to widen the shoulders or dangerous to ride on (see Rt. 60) or the railways. I like the idea of the bike route on Rt. 60, but all they did was stripe it and didn't offer any physical separation between cars going 55+ mph 4-5 ft away. That's just not safe.
I like the touch with the decorative walls. I hope they incorporate some other elements like those in other parts of the PATH project.
