According to the article, the money will be used for the development of a new Center for Diagnostic Nano-systems in Huntington.

"That center will be responsible for developing new non-invasive technologies designed to detect and diagnose disease and illness at very early stages."

Sounds pretty cool.

I'm glad to hear it. MU becoming a solid research university can only add to its potential and positive growth.

You gotta love Robert Byrd. In spite of the fact that he
is brazenly bizzare, his pork barrel potential is beyond
reproach. He can always be counted on to bring home
the bacon. This is a real positive for Huntington. Let's
hope he lives long enough to keep things rolling in the
foreseeable future.

I'm suprised he hasn't requested his name to be attached with the school. Marshall University of Robert C. Byrd.

Default MU receives $3 million for medical research

Many of the research projects are for medical and biotech research and also partner MU with schools around the state including WVU, West Liberty and WV Wesleyan College.

Huntington -- Faculty members at Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine have been awarded $3 million in federal grants to work on biomedical research and workforce development programs.

The money was given from the National Institute of Health through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Dr. Richard Niles, a professor in the medical school, said Marshall is well on its way to becoming a leading research institution.

"It's really taken off in the last five or six years," Niles said. "Now hiring faculty from other institutions, and they are bringing grants with them to Marshall. We are well on our way to not only becoming a great academic institution, but a great research institution as well."

Four of the projects, which account for about $2.5 million of the total, are associated with the West Virginia-IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence.

Default Marshall University Expecting More Growth

President Kopp is giving an update to the Board of Governors here in Huntington tomorrow about several different growth issues at MU. Among them are:

"First-time freshmen applications are up 38 percent over the same time last year for in-state students. That equates to 920 more applications than last year. Applications for nonresident metro students also are up 15 percent."

"Marshall's goal is to have 2,000 new, first-time students in its freshmen class by 2012. This fall, first-time freshmen enrollment was up more than 11 percent to hit around 1,900."

"The awarding of the construction contract for the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine’s Logan County Rural Health and Clinical Education Center."

"Intent to plan a doctoral in pharmacy degree"

Next, they need to work on a dentistry school as well. With the poor statistics WV sees in the health and dentistry fields, any expansion and extra access they can add in these areas is greatly needed.

Impressive stats and projections. It appears that building that rec center along with the new dorms is attracting more students. It's nice when you have an alternative to hanging out on 4th avenue at the bars.

It's the same phenom that is going on all over the country. With the bad economy, commuter schools are seeing huge spikes in freshman enrollment as fewer people can afford to go away to school. Marshall is benefitting from the trend too. Believe me, it is in spite of S. Kopp, not because of him. Here he goes instituting another new "program" when he didn't even have the money to give his faculty and staff a decent raise this year or last.

Like him or not, Kopp is getting things done in Huntington. The new Rec Center, two new dorms, an engineering lab and a softball field all without a dime of state or federal money. That's $100 million in new facilities without a single dime of taxpayer money. If I remember correctly CT, you were claiming the Rec Center would have no effect on enrollment but it was up 11% for freshmen last year and applications are up sharply this year as well. Seems like that's a pretty significant effect to me and it hasn't even been open a full year. Kopp is also adding new programs and I applaud him for this. Yes it takes money to do so, but what is the goal of a university? To provide educational opportunities for current and prospective students. If MU wants to grow, they have to continue to add more programs that people want. This makes MU more attractive not only for those graduate programs but for undergrad as well. Most students are more likely to go to the school that has the degree they want. Then they don't have to worry about transferring credits or adjusting to the campus. I agree with GHO about needing a Law School, and it's appropriate since the school is named for a Supreme Court Justice. I also stand by what I said about them needing a Dentistry School as well. And MU isn't the only school not giving raises to employees. The Daily Athenaeum - Faculty Senate reacts to lack of raises
