Continental auto plant to lay off 377

Wednesday, May 13, 2009 By MARIAN ACCARDI
Times Business Writer marian.accardi@htimes.com

The Continental Automotive plant in Huntsville has notified 346 hourly and 31 salaried bargaining unit employees that they'll be laid off on Friday or within 14 days after that.
The layoffs are in response to the extended manufacturing downtime at Chrysler as a result of the automaker's bankruptcy, said Michele Tinson, a spokeswoman for the Continental Automotive Division in Auburn Hills, Mich. The layoffs, Tinson said, are temporary since "eventually production levels will resume."
But the duration of the layoffs is uncertain for now, she said.

however, if you look back to the news there have been smaller waves of layoffs in the past (60+ people as recently as a month ago).

couple this with other large-scale (1500+ empl) manufacturing operations downsizing , and the picture is not so perfect anymore, KE. Sure, compared to (tens of) thousands of RSA&co -type employees, "civilian" (non-defense) manufacturing is a drop in a bucket.

Chrysler has shutdown its US factories, and stopped paying suppliers. They are expected to cut several vehicle lines before emerging from bankruptcy, so less parts will be needed when car production resumes. The Huntsville factory directly competes with other Continental plants in Mexico and the Texas border. Guess who is winning?

From my understanding, this is the largest layoff in Huntsville.

I've heard of several companies in Huntsville that are having (or have had) layoffs. They seem to be doing it in smaller, measured amounts so there is little, if any, publicity associated with it. Other organizations are doing things like unpaid furloughs, etc. Again, not too much publicity associated with it.

That's good that Huntsville is participating in smaller layoffs than larger ones.

and Why is that, KE?

Read: smaller and in succession, not rapid succession, but consecutive nonetheless (monthly). Smaller numbers add up too. As other posters said: companies are trying other avenues before doing (major) layoffs: hour reduction, furloughs, unpaid leave (plant maintenance). So, definitely, the smaller layoffs are by no means a good sign. And how small and safe (for the remaining employees) is too small?
