I mentioned Crosby, TX a few days ago on this thread -- Arkema chemical plant was flooded and had unstable chemicals. There have been fires and their predicted explosion did happen. It's still burning.

Love this story. Jeff Lindner, a Meteorologist with the Harris County Flood Control District has been working tirelessly reporting on the rivers and bayous, and the reservoirs. So someone set up a fund so that Jeff can go on vacation. He said he can't believe it, that he was 'just doing his job.' If you want to read more on that just search out his name and story.
Re the Crosby plant
Our GOP legislature and govenor after the West fertilizer plant explosion which was a huge liability issue made it easier for chemical companies/plants in Texas to conceal what chemicals they have in store
Arkama has refused at every instance to reveal the specific chemicals and their amounts...
Now they are having fires with very toxic chemicals induced into the air
And they are still (as far as I know) refusing to release that info
The company ALSO could have prevented these explosions and fires if they had been willing to use a "damper system" which will smother the chemicals when they reach point of volatility before exploding...
Doing that will elemenation the risk of explosion/fire BUT it also renders the chemicals unuseable for sale or as ingredient in mfg...
So to be safe they have to "kill" their products...they were not willing to do that...
They were MORE willing to put the health and safety of first responders, people in immediate area, and anyone who might come in contact with their products in smoke and other ways...
And OUR legislature does not mandate that any-all chemical companies use the "damping" method...
They let the companies decide what is best way to prevent a hostile chain reaction...
Yea, GOP led legislature...
Back to the weather and Harvey. A friend just emailed me:
"The storm is here now. (Cincinnati, OH) High winds threats of flash flooding. We are right on the border. Northern Ky. is expecting alot. they are predicting winds up to 30 mile gusts and 6 inches of rain. Unbelievable its moving this far up.
This chart is from an Ohio News station and posted August 30, 2017.
Nice!! I saw on social media he was actually answering peoples specific questions almost literally around the clock! Nice to see someone engaged like that especially given the responsibilities he has during such an event.
Flash flood warnings w/5 inches of rain predicted
And people expected Houston to design itself out of a 50" rain storm-flood...
Two different standards it seems...
Harvey makes a big impression, that's for sure...
Heard story on PBS radio today about young couple who were from Rockport area...
Had to leave...lost everything basically because of force of hurricane and outside place where they were sheltering they heard a dog...went outside found a puppy, lost, wet, looking for a home...
Took him in...found a vet, started his shots and got him chipped...
Taking him back to Rockport to start rebuilding their lives...
Named him Harvey of course...
She said they wanted a puppy; so they got something good out of this experience after all...

Per Jeff Lindner & Harris County, the $18,000+ raised will be donated to charity. As a government employee he can't accept it but also said on social media "let's turn this into something that can help the those that need it." Ready Harris > News & Information > Ready Harris News
.... What are the odds two CAT 4 hurricanes his the US within 2-3 weeks of each other?
Two Cat4's (at time of landfall) hitting the US in the same year is beleived to have only happened once in 1915 with one into Galveston and one near New Orleans. A couple times storms came close but that's the only time I see at the moment.
I know Galveston was decimated but the NO landfall if away from the city was likely mainly plantation/bayou land, much fewer people than Galveston or NO proper...
Going into the east coast after the damage in Rockport (itself decimated) and the flooding from Katy to LA border just boggles my mind...
The costs --financial, infrastructure, ecological, emotional and physical to people --long and short term frankly boggle my mind...surreal...
