Interesting (and a bit depressing) to hear that a 250 is too small. I only have a few miles on the DR650 and was already wondering if I should have gotten a more dirt-oriented bike for adventure touring, and was considering a WR250R. No worries, no money for a second bike right now anyway...and many feet of snow in the mountains.

DR, do you or anyone you ride with use the Giant Loop saddlebags? They look appealing, if spendy.

I bought a real Big Agness sleeping bag and air mattress and even after 200 miles of dirt it's pretty comfortable in that tent at night.
My drz will go a good 160 miles on a tank but I have strapped on an extra gallon before when we take extra long trips between gas stations.
I'd lean to a 400cc to save weight, but go for a larger aftermarket gas tank from Clarke mfg. I'd need to do some serious seat height lowering, though. I'll be up next week to interview & look around.

I have been using Motopak bags on my drz. MotoPak: Motorcycle Luggage
I was told by a friend these were the bomb when it came to not loosing your stuff on the trail.
No tears or signs of wear in 5000 miles.
Yes a fuel tank upgrade is worth the money too. Extra fuel makes me feel better when i'm lost..
Last year a herd of antelope ran right next to me for many thousands of yards at 30 mph. I want to go back there this year again. Have to have luggage for that trip and good scotch in a plastic flask.

Make sure you have a bottle for both sides. Got to keep the weight equal on both saddlebags for when you get BIG AIR!

Can you get a dirt bike legal for the highways in Idaho? Do you just need the turn signal/headlight kit, or have to go through a lenghthy registration process?
KTM is too expensive. I'm thinking of a WR450 or TT version by Yamaha. (The DRZ would require suspension and other mods for good off work IMHO.)

I am trying to keep the weight down. A 450cc machine comes in around 240lbs, the 600cc machines-about 100lbs more. I had a fairly tough time uprighting my SV when it came off the side stand( thank heaven for SW Motech engine bars- no damage to the bike)
I know I'm going to go down on occaision, so a lighter machine will be easier to lift.

A KLR would be my choice for 650cc machine, naturally.

You can put any bike you want on the street up here. My buddy has a plate on his cr500. He also has the lights on it too. I have my xr650r converted for the street and dirt. A basic dual sport kit will get ya by around here. Although quads are slowly taking over around here. Fifteen years ago their was single track all over the Cda area. A lot of it is gone now.
