Lewiston is not immune to cold weather and snow, however. It just is the last place in Eastern WA/Central ID to get it. The low elevation provides a bit of a blanket, but at times snow can reach into this area. In the summer, it is warmer than Moscow/Pullman, and competes with Boise as the warmest part of the state. (Don't want to get into that Boise/Lewiston argument about who has warmer summers again, frankly).

That is so bizarre. It looks like Lewiston is just 20-25 miles away from Pullman, yet they don't get as much snow as Pullman does? Or maybe Pullman does not get as much snow as I thought it gets?

It appears bizarre because you aren't looking at the 2000 ft difference in elevation. Lewiston is much lower. Google "Lewiston Grade" for some pics that will explain everything.

Thanks Keim and Clark Fork Fantast for providing the information on this. I was always amazed at the difference between Pullman/Moscow and Lewiston. But yes, elevation is everything in this case.

Check out this video of a motorcycle going up it.

Old Lewiston Grade "The Spiral Highway" - GOING UP - YouTube

This is the old road up the grade. New one isn't so curvy.

That is so cool .

Is this road still used a lot? I wonder if anyone rides a bicycle on it... looks dangerous since not much shoulder!
