From the pages of Feast Day of Fools by James Lee Burke:

We live in a country that has created a huge serving class of illegals who work for low pay at jobs Americans won't do. We get along very well with these people during prosperous times. But as soon as the economy goes down, they're treated like dirt.

Mr. Burke is not noted for conservative views, and the quality of his prose rises above politics. He has stated the problem, but who's got the solution?

First off they aren't doing jobs that Americans won't do. Most Americans object to illegal immigration regardless of whether times are good or bad because they still take more in taxes than they contribute and it is against the law to live or work here illegally. Employers who hire them are breaking the law also.

Many solutions have been provided in here to this problem. The most sensible one and in the best interests of this nation is to remove all of the incentives for them to remain here or to continue to come here which are the job and benefit's magnets. E-verify and denying birthright citizenship to children of illegal immigrants are at the top of my list. The worst solution is to grant any of them any form of amnesty. We did that once and now we have many times more illegal immigrants now than we did back then.

Americans won't do those jobs because they don't pay anything. Illegals are only capable of living on those jobs by accepting third world living conditions. They also get subsidies from the American taxpayer in the form of items like schooling and infrastructure maintainance that neither they nor their greedy and unscrupulous employers pay for.

When one considers the fact that the people in question break our laws, push down wages, overcrowd our schools, siphon money out of our economy to support dictators abroad, largely refuse to learn English and show this country and it's people no loyalty and respect at all they are actually treated fairly nicely. Most places would not hire interpreters, fund ESL classes where the emphasis is on never forgetting you are an Mexican instead of acquiring English fluency and grant millions in taxpayer provided medical insurance and food stamps to those willfully breaking multiple American laws.

If they feel they are treated like dirt they are welcome to go home. They are the problem. The solution is for them to go back home to Mexico and make it a better place instead of demanding Americans bend to their selfish ends.

I know several people who USED to work in construction making a decent salary.
They no longer work in construction but not because they don't want to.

Their mere presence represents their disrespect of the sovereign whose protection they seek (or act entitled to), because they act as if a nation's permission is an unfair threshold to satisfy. They should not be expected to have anyone's permission to be here. And those who would like permission believe that their convenience is a superior interest to other considerations. They don't believe in fairness; if they did, they'd urge for ships to go to Chile, Africa and China to bridge the unfair distance that some ethnicities face compared with those closer. This is not about fairness for illegals. It's self-interested, self-centered convenience. Which is like a culture dish for entitlement. And is shared by many of the employers of those illegals. Amnesty for illegals will be unfair, is not compassionate, is indeed a slap in the face of legal immigrants. It is an abandonment of the duty of sovereigns.
