Here are two beliefs often held by conservatives. I just had a light bulb moment and realized that they're not in any way compatible:

"Immigration (legal or not) is bad because it takes jobs from Americans."
&&&
"If people are unhappy with their current economic situation, they should work to change it instead of demanding policies to get help from the government."

Thoughts?

Lets fix your comment: "Illegal Immigration is bad because it takes jobs from low-skilled Americans." and lets add to your comment: and it suppresses/lowers wages of low-skilled Americans.

Now lets fix your second part: "If people are unhappy with their current economic situation, they should work to change it instead of demanding help from the government."

You do realize the US Constitution mandates that Congress is given the power to prescribed a uniform rule of Naturalization, right?

Uh; it's the Feds' business to keep ILLEGAL aliens OUT of the US. If the Feds blow it; time to keep their feet in the fire till the illegals are running OUT of the US.

How are those two beliefs not compatible? Illegals often do take jobs -- otherwise they're living off government handouts.

As far as someone being unhappy with their current economic situation, what does breaking the laws of our country have to do with working to change their country?

A country like Mexico for example actually has a reasonable constitution and people in that country are working to change their situation by finishing school. delaying the start of a familiy, limiting family size to what they can afford AND they are becoming middle class.

In reality, Mexico's middle class is growing, the middle class of the USA is in decline -- pouring over the borders is not about improving one's self. It's about breaking the laws and then demanding easy citizenship as the reward. Illegals are those who refuse to improve themselves in their own country and because they refuse to become educated and start having babies they cannot afford, they figure they can simply come here for the big easy money and government handouts.

The only recent amnesty was in 1986. The conservative President Ronald Reagan signed that legislation. When liberal President Obama had a Democratic Congress; he did not even push amnesty. Both Republicans and Democrats have pushed for amnesty – regardless of the wishes of their constituents. They both have their own agenda – one wants cheap labor and the other wants votes. Don't kid yourself that one side or the other actually cares about the illegals or the people that they serve.

It is not rocket science about who is going to loose if we dump more illegals into the labor force. We have poor minorities that will be hit hard and we also have legal immigrants that will not fair well. It was not too many years ago that the liberal Democratic would have championed our homeless and our downtrodden middle class. Have you heard any politicians recently talk about the homeless? Have you heard anybody take the side of the working poor?

Amnesty and unchecked illegal immigration is killing the life style that immigrants come to America to enjoy. It is also putting more pressure on American taxpayers that are currently struggling.

I think your light bulb is a little dim. The two ideas are compatible if you change the "Immigration" to
what it really is, illegal alien immigration. That doesn't fit your limited view though, huh ?

Fixed for you. Don't try to mix legal immigrants like myself with illegals!

How are these points not compatable? Take away the illegal labor which presents unfair competition and an unfair shift of socual costs from the employers who are benefitting (the few) to the general public (the many). Then, encourage fulfillment of the second ideal by tying entitlements with working in the available jobs as a stepping stone to financial independence. This is bad because....?

I suspect a majority of Americans will describe themselves, overall, as "moderate." And, we know that a majority of Americans ... of all "stripes" support reform of our immigration policies and a path to legalization/citizenship for the estimated 6 million Mexicans in the country and 5 million persons from other countries who are here improperly as well.
