According to President Bush, and the governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Minuteman are vigilantes. This tells me the President, and the Governor, wants us to get rid of the Minuteman, in order to keep them away from the border, so the illegal aliens can continue to flood our country. Why else would they make these knowingly false accusations?
This was written to one of MCDC moderators (Tony), and it looks like he got a little upset................
Incidentally, since I got at least one PM telling me that I am a "pacifist" and that the illegal alien problem is due to people like me (a member for about two and a half years and recently graduated to line leader status) being easy on illegals, apparently a few people need to read the MCDC SOP before they start shooting their mouth off about what they want to do to illegals.
Standard Operating Procedure for Minuteman Civil Defense Corps.
1. Minutemen are courteous to everyone with whom they come into contact, and never discriminate against anyone for any reason.
2. Minutemen do not respond to any taunts or harassment from outside agitators, and must never be present for duty or serve in any capacity if intoxicated.
3. *Minutemen Observe, Report,Record, and Direct Border Patrol or other appropriate emergency or law enforcement agencies to suspected Illegal Aliens or Illegal Activities.
4. Minutemen do not verbally contact, physically gesture to or have any form of communications with suspected Illegal Aliens.
5. Minutemen follow the Standard Operating Procedures to the letter and spirit.
6. Minutemen follow all federal, state and local laws, understanding that we are being held to a higher standard by all.
7. Minutemen understand that, while our actions cannot stop illegal activities along the border, we can change world perception and national thought concerning Homeland and Border Security.
8. Minutemen monitor their behavior, the behavior of the people around them and the group as a whole to ensure compliance with the SOP and any instruction given by Minuteman Corps Leadership.
9. Minutemen leave no garbage behind and follow strict pack-in / pack-out procedures.
10. Minutemen respect the property rights of everyone, start no fires, never drive off road, and follow the directions of all law enforcement personnel.
I don't see anything in there about it being OK to do bad things to illegals.
In short, gripe at me all you want, but if you said that "shoot the illegals" crap at a muster there would be a whole bunch of Minutemen turning around, looking at you, and telling you to knock that crap off. If people want to set up sniper towers, let them do it without linking themselves to this organization. The MCDC has succeeded thus far because we have resisted this sort of fringe stuff. No matter what you think personally, one person's personal agenda is not worth blowing years of this organization's existence. It's not going to be allowed on these forums.

Everyone thinks if we don't want them here illegally then, we are turning our backs on them. Those that support them coming illegally must not care what happens in the travel to get here.

Honestly, I don't have a problem with the notion of Minutemen. I think it's an admirable thing when common citizens step up and take responsibility for themselves.
But here's where the Minutemen bother me:
1. They are not elected, appointed, or for that matter, trained, by any competent legal authority.
2. You can quote SOP all you like, but if you recall Enron also had an SOP. And we all know how well that was applied. Should the Minutemen engage in some illegal activity, it's small consolation when one of their representatives goes on TV to explain "the Minutemen have a standard operating procedure..."
3. The idea of Minutemen presenting for "duty" is disturbing. This implies they belong to a chain of command. And as far as I know the Commander in Chief has no authority over them, nor are they bound to the terms of the UCMJ or Geneva Convention. If they can't function like our military, the shouldn't cast themselves as part of the national defense.
4. Point #6 in general: The Minutemen aren't held to a higher standard than the police or the United States Army. Saying a group of guys with beer guts, lawn chairs and pickup trucks are held to higher standard than our fighting men & women is an insult.
5. Finally, the fact that they have to use Clause #10 to explicity state their adherence to the Constitution makes me question their capacity as citizens.
I'll trust the security of our borders to the police, Border Control, Army, or any other publicly accountable institution over these self-appointed authorities, thank you.

I dont see them as authority figures, just americans fed up with "competent legal authority" and there lack of action.

Honestly though. Say you were with a pregnant woman in the middle of nowhere who was about to give birth. Would you....
a. Wait for a Doctor, Paramedic/EMT, or other trained professional to show up, and let the woman or baby die because you didn't have a license to practice medicine.
or
b. Give it your best shot in the interest of being a decent person, and hope for the best since nobody else was there to do the job.

As much as I hate to admit it, I agree with Bush and the Governator on this one. The Minuteman are vigilantes. Not in the Charles Bronson sense, but in the historic sense. That is exactly what they are.
I'll be the first to admit that illegal immigration is a huge problem and that our leaders are failing us. But what the Minuteman are doing is not only ineffective, it's a recipe for disaster.
