I have seen so much talk about Cairo, it's history, not all of which has been rosy. If indeed this is the death blow to Cairo and it ceases to exist it may be merciful in some ways as it seems there was so much negativity spoken over the fact the town could never recover from it's past. Strange how these things happen.

Interesting decision to make. Flood thousands of acres and displace hundreds of farmers or save a dilapidated, run down town? Which costs more to relocate or rebuild? Which is more important to the US or regional economy?

Cairo is at the Confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. When ol' Muddy floods, so does the Illinois River. it's flooded all the way to Peoria. Flooding in Illinois, and on the rivers is nothing new or any more surprising that Sunday dinner and wet basements. How bad any flood is depends upone where you live when it floods. I am not in a Flood Plain; it does make a big difference. .

Default I really hate to say this..

It is not a hard decision for Springfield. Cairo has been ignored by the state for years. The corn export brings in several billion dollars annually.

Fulton County had the same problem for 50-years after the land drained and turned nature into farmland. Several years ago the state bought the property, removed the existing buildings and now the area is once again the largest natural resting, nesting and feeding wetlands refuge in America.

Come see our eagles fly and watch our pelicans fish.

The Tribune had an article that the Army Corp wanted to blow the Missouri Levee and it went to court in Cape Girardeau. I think a verdict was supposed to be reached yesterday but I didn't see anything in the paper.

Judge Stephen Limbaugh ruled that the levee can be intentionally blow up.
