I'll be working near Union Hospital, yes. Commute is not such a big deal - I've had 1.5 hour commutes in my life, although avoiding that is obviously preferable.

I don't have a rental yet as this has all come together in the past week and there simply is no time. I do have housing for the first week so that should buy us some time. It's just been impossible to handle things from this distance while trying to pack a house at the same time.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

Just an update to our situation - we did find a place to rent relatively quickly (within 48 hours we had keys and were in). The folks at Pfister were very nice and we found a lovely, new condo at a reasonable rate.

We had a nightmare of an experience with the local Prudential property management folks, however. I was happy for them to keep the $50 application fee just to never have to deal with them again. Too bad, because the property itself was quite nice...but their property manager was a complete PITA to work with. I wish there was a way to tell the owner of the property he'd be better off if he found a new property manager!

The trick to renting in this town appears to be: be prepared to drive all over town. No one advertises, and especially not online. By randomly driving around we found several properties that we found to be acceptable - none of them advertised in the local paper or online.
