and we don't sit around in Indiana watching a tornado approach for several days like they do hurricanes down in Florida and elsewhere along the Gulf coast. we also don't rush to stores loading up on supplies, plywood, generators, bottled ater, food and other items. we just go on about our everyday business and don't give twisters much thought.

Thanks for the info about the twisters. People had kept telling me that Indiana got a lot of tornados. I heard they get a lot of warnings, but the tornados are not that frequent. Being from New Hampshire I don't no much about them except from watching them on tv. Pretty freaking scary! But, I can't stand New Hampshire; it was like 16 below this morning. It’s been below zero most of the month. Winters really bite up here. So do mountains, snow storms, driving in the snow for that matter, and moose. I can go on and on. Boy, I really want to move out of New England and Southern Indiana seems really nice. Just got a little nervous about those twisters.

Thanks,

Jer

LOL I've hit one with my car, which was only a small little Ford Escort. Me and moose don't get along. It's like driving straight into a horse! I saw a hugh one last weekend, actually!

I've lived in Columbus for ~6 years now. We have not had a tornado touch down in town in that time.

Two things that are helpful:
1. Most of the houses here have basements.
2. We have an excellent warning-siren system. (Note: they test those sirens at noon on the first Friday of every month...I wish someone had explained that to me when I first moved here LOL).

I've lived with earthquakes (CA) and hurricanes (TX coast) and I must say, tornados are the least-worrisome weather-related emergency for me. Why? They tend to be very localized. While it might be devastating to lose one's home in a tornado, chances are very good that local services (EMT, fire dept., hospitals, water, electric...) will continue to function. The same can not always be said of hurricane and earthquake scenarios.

It seems like tornado sirens go off all the time. After having been through one, I get this "feeling" (can't explain it better than that) if we need to go into the basement. So far, it's worked. I've had the feeling one time and when we went into the basement, we found out the tornado was a mile away from our house ... so my feeling is off by a mile, darn.

Thanks a bunch for this info. I feel much better now about those tornadoes. I'm coming down to Columbus in April for a week, for now. Hopefully move there in the summer, if my wife and I can find a job and stuff. Can't wait to get away from New Hamsphire!

Jer

Be sure to hit the outlet mall just outside Columbus! Also, check out Brown County state park ... just beautiful. I'm sure Plaidmom will be able to give you a long list of things to see and do in or near Columbus.

and don't forget to bring the moose. You can drop them off first before you hit the Columbus Outlet Mall along I-65.

Thanks, I'll be sure to check those places out. Plaidmom gave me some great info about Columbus already. I'm also looking forward to checking out the Total Fitness of Columbus. Huge Gym, which is just what I would like to be part of.
