Moving to Evansville, IN (Indianapolis, Jasper: real estate, how much, house) - City-Data Forum

My family and I may be moving from Denver, CO to Evansville, IN in the near future. Overall, is Evansville a good city to live in? Is it ok to live near USI? How is the traffic, especially for newly licensed young drivers? What is the weather like in the winter? Much snow or ice? Where is the nearest full service airport? Are the homes expensive and are the real estate taxes high? Can anyone recommend a realtor?

Overall, is Evansville a good city to live in? >...Maybe I'm a bit partial, But I think Evansville is a great place to live. I have lived here my entire life and also raised my family here.

Is it ok to live near USI?>... USI is a great west side area, Gently rolling terrain with some forest just on the outskirts of town, yet close to everthing one would need.

How is the traffic, especially for newly licensed young drivers?>...Evansville has one main artery that is mostly elevated multi lane (Lloyd Expressway) that goes right through the middle of town East and West. It is heavily traveled with 40-50 MPH speed limit. Hwy 41 is another main artery, mostly two lane divided that goes North and South with LOTS of stop lights, again usually a fair amount of traffic. I-164 is kinda like a loop around the city, although it does not go all the way around. It travels mostly around the East and South side. Veterans Parkway picks up I-164 on the south end and leads Westerly to the river front and downtown area. Diamond Ave is a main artery on the North side of town that goes East and West. Just like any other town, keep your mind on the driving and watch the other guy.

What is the weather like in the winter? Much snow or ice?>...Generally speaking, Evansville weather is not as bad as the rest of the state as far as ice and snow. Seems like there is a line about I-64 and North of there that gets the worst of it. However there are exceptions, A couple of years ago Evansville had a 22" snowfall. However that is very rare. Also the winters can be never ending with many consecutive gloomy days without ever seeing the sun. Spring is always a welcome relief! The humidity in the summer can be devastating at times.

Where is the nearest full service airport?>... Evansville has a regional airport. I think probably the closest large airport would be Louisville KY., about two hours drive time away. Also, Indianapolis, St. Louis and Nashville are all within 3-4 hours drive time.

Are the homes expensive and are the real estate taxes high?>...Again, generally speaking, as with most area's there are homes in all price ranges. As far as property taxes, I'm thinking someone else may answer that better than I ever could. There has been a recent re-assesment in Vanderburgh County with quite a few disgruntled home owners appealing.

Can anyone recommend a realtor? >... Again, not sure how much help I can be, but two names that come to mind are Emge and Helfrich realtors. They have been around for as long as I can remember. I think they have a good reputation and I am thinking they are family owned.

I grew up in Evansivlle and lived in Indianapolis and now Chicago. Coming from a large city like Denver Evansville will be a shock for you. NOt much really goes on. HIghschool sports and a D2 college(USI) and a small private mid major college are the only other sports people care about. Highschool football is huge and Evansville is more of a southern state than you think. The only other major events (besides highschool football games.LOL) are the Fall Festival and the Freedom Festival where they race hydroplaines. The weather is pretty normal and for driving there are a lot of stop lights. The down town is pretty much non existent. I mean there is a small skyline but people dont care about it like in other cities. Its not the heart of the city by any means. Their has been efforts to draw more business and people to it but they have failed.

HOmes arent very expensive. There arent really any suburbs like in larger cities. Instead everyone has their own side of town. YOu will hear the term Westsider or Eastsider a lot and people dont like to leave their sides of town. You either stay on your side of town forever or go away to college and eventually move to a new city. LIke me. And its not common for people to move from areas like denver.

I have lived in Evansville my entire life and graduated from USI. I plan on moving in the near future as well. As for Evansville, I think it's a great place to settle down and riase a family. As for a single, there's really not all too much to do. Night life is kind of dead, with the exception of a few places. Downtown Evansville is really a joke, as they have attempted to liven it up a bit but no huge improvements. My recommendation for living by USI on the west side of Evansville is don't. It's not a nice part of town (not near as bad as the south) but it has it's large share of white trash. I recommend the East side or Newburgh where most businesses are located. The winters are not bad here at all, we get some snow but it's not awful. The summers are decent though they can get hot and humid. The median home price I would say is around 150,000 or so...50,000 if you live on the west side and 5,000 for the south!

I suppose this could be too late a reply for you. Lived in Evansville for almost 50 years. It's a great city. Earlier posters didn't do the city justice. The riverfront is beautiful and a wonderful place to walk. Downtown is much livlier than reflected, depending on your interests. The casino boat area has fine restaurants and other attractions. I can't believe the white trash on the West Side comment above. It would imply you'd be in danger living near USI. That's terribly misleading. There are many fine areas near USI that are great to live in. There are fine golf courses in town and nearby, and boating on the beautiful Ohio is very popular. The Evansville Regional Airport is served by American Eagle, Delta Connections, and Northwest Airlink. There are 25 daily departures, total, to Chicago, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Memphis and Detroit. There are excellent health care facilities, including two large hospitals. There is a fine, highly respected, rapidly growing zoo. Downtown also has two exceptional museums, a large central library (which has numerous branches throughout the city), a beautifully restored, approximately 2,000-seat concert hall where the Evansville Philharmonic plays, and a large convention center which includes a terrific theatre and concert hall (that hosts touring Broadway shows). There are also very active community theater groups. There are a number of annual fesitvals worth attending. A short drive away is the historic town of New Harmony, a great place to visit with a surprising number of artistic and historic points of interest. Although the population within city limits is just over 100,000, the city's size is better reflected by the fact that its metro popultion is around 300,000.

Hi! My husband and I are thinking about moving to Evansville or Henderson area this summer and wondered if anyone knew of some areas that would be nice/safe? Looking for a house in 150,000 to 250,000 range, with lots of development around. Would like stores, restaurants just right across the street! lol Also, where we live now is really manicured with flowers and trees and stone facings in the shopping center so I'd like something like that. If anyone knows of any areas like this please let me know! Thanks

Jasper is a really clean town. Evansville has some good parts and some not so good parts. My girls dad lived there til he died and he loved it. Me personally I wouldn't want to live there. If u are looking for a nice town I'd check into Jasper. It's only about an hours drive from e-ville and alot nicer in my opinion. I don't live there now but used to..

The north or Eastern parts of Vanderburgh county are nice, as is the town of Newburgh in nearby Warrick county. Jasper is a significant drive away, although it, too, is a very nice, picturesque-albeit-little town.

DO NOT move to the southwestern side of Evansville (south of the Llyod and west of hwy 41), that is the "bad side" of town, lol.

Try for the north end or east side, or even Newburgh or Chandler.

USI is on the west side of town, and not too bad. (most of your shopping and malls are on the east side though)

Traffic is normal for any city, but the "expressway" has quite a few stoplights, so be warned, lol.

EVV is the closest full service airport and it's small but you can go almost anywhere from there.

Weather is cold during the winter (no where near the snow and ice you currently get), but not too bad, half the winter I wear just a hoodie or a sweatshirt, and the other half I actually wear a coat.

Good realtors are either Emge, or FC Tucker.

Newburgh fits your bill quite nicely.

I live about 2 mins from Newburgh and LOVE this area.

Castle schools are great, lower crime, and good neighbourhoods.
