I am moving to Indianapolis with my family for work. I own a boat and some wave runners and I am wondering where is the best lake in the Indianapolis area for recreational boating. Places with beaches would be appreciated, as the family likes to park it on the beach when we're not in the boat.

Eagle Creek Reservoir. There are some limitations on the type of craft, however, so do check in advance.

Otherwise you have Lake Monroe about 45 minutes south of Indianapolis, along with some others in much the same distance. Lake Monroe is probably the largest body of recreational water close by, I believe.

Just a bit of a correction here: I live very close to one of the Lake Monroe ramps. It takes at least an hour and 15 minutes from downtown Indy to the various ramps. The ramps are all far enough away from Bloomington that it adds significant driving time. There are two beaches: one at Fairfax and one at Paynetown. I don't know about Paynetown, but at Fairfax you would probably have to pay for a slip, if you wanted to park the boat for awhile, to use the beach. I don't think they'll let you park your boat outside the beach area. I do know lots of people just anchor their boats in a variety of places around the lake and enjoy swimming in the lake. Lake Monroe is crazy, busy on summer weekends. Personally I would never go out there on weekends--hate to be a bit negative about that, but it's true.

I think motor size is limited at Eagle Creek. Probably don't allow wave runners.

If it wasn't for that hell-hole known as Chicago, Lake Michigan could be a good option.

But I doubt you want to travel to Illinoise-Rahmastan-TaxaMassive-Quinnyville.

Eagle Creek and Geist Reservoir are areas to check out.

I also remember from my younger years going to Lake Lemon.

Other than that, there aren't many "lakes" in Indiana.

Morse Reservoir has a marina on Hague Rd just north of Carrigan Rd next to Wolfie's restaurant. I believe this is the only boat launch on Morse and it can get pretty crazy on weekends.
