Indianapolis homicide rate up 60% over 2012 (2013, low crime, living)

I knew the rate was up from last year but was shocked to hear that it was up 60%. If this trend continues Indy will end 2013 with twice as many murders as last year.

By math, Indy is on pace to hit 130-140 homicides. I think we were at 115(?) last year. I know its the media's job to flog people into a frenzy, but 115 doubled does not equal 140.

I think WTHR is referring to the trend continuing to increase throughout the rest of 2013. Still, even if it is "only" 25% higher than 2012 it is still an alarming increase.

I thought 115 murders in 2012 was disturbing for a city that had been considered to be low crime.

They might be, the local media regularly reaches on its reporting, across all subjects. History tells us the rate has peaks and valleys, and doubling the number from last year is not likely. Of course, the panic first fact check later media doesn't care.

As far as disturbing, I seem to remember the politicos hand slapping eachother because 115 was supposed to be low. Its an overrated stat anyway, most homicides are not random and in areas most on this forum would never consider living anyway.
