I came from North Carolina where I had accounts with Wachovia, actually still do as I'm hoping to move back to the South in a few years.

Out of the banks here I went with Chase just because it has a lot of branches around which is convenient to cash checks or to write small ones locally to pay the bills.

I also had some Wachovia checks printed with my local address.

No experience, but Irwin is in financial straits big time.

I don't know if 5/3 covers all the areas you're interested in, but I do both my personal and business banking there and have been very pleased with their service.

Have you tried community banks? Depending on where you live you should check out the banks closest to you. The one's that offer the friendly service and diverse products would be my choice. My opinion is partial because I work for a bank!!

This post has been very helpful. After much consideration I went with 5/3.

They have branches in Atlanta, Nashville (where parent company is), and of course Indy. They don't have branches in the DC/Baltimore area, but the account I signed up for allows me to use any out of network ATM for free, both sides of ATM fees.

5/3 doesn't seem like it has the best online banking site, which is a bummer considering that was my only gripe with Wachovia.

We'll see how it goes, I can guess I can always switch if I am not happy.

"No experience, but Irwin is in financial straits big time." Just checking that out. I haven't had any dealings with IUB to suggest problems but the press is running hot and cold. This is from 2006 when everything looked peachie: The Gold Standard in Commercial Banking: Irwin Union Bank | Banking & Finance > Banking & Finance Overview from AllBusiness.com (http://www.allbusiness.com/north-america/united-states-california-metro-areas/4081444-1.html - broken link) It appears that IUB got tangled up in some bad home-equity paper. I don't know if bailout money is in the picture. They started opening banks in the southwest and Michigan and may have spred themselves a little thin, with the mortgage problems - don't know - still searching for info. I still feel comfortable with NBofI, though. Sticking with them. No such bad news that I've found and I've been maintaining a daily Google Alert for months now.

I hope you have better luck with them than I did.

I get my paycheck direct deposited into my checking account. It's deposited at 8am on Thursday's. I got a notice from 5/3 that I'm overdrawn on a Thursday that I got paid. I go in and talk to them thinking it has to be some mistake. No, I used my debit card at 7:58am on Thursday and it overdrew me something like 50 cents. I don't get the notice until I've been overdrawn 3 days. That's $30 in overdraft fees, $6 a day that it's overdrawn for a grand total of $54 for 50 cents. Since I didn't get the notice until Saturday I couldn't get to the bank until Monday hence the extra $6.

How I could overdraw on a debit purchase I don't know but it happened. At the time my brother worked at 5/3 in downtown Cincy in IT. I told him about it and he said that what happened to me is routine at 5/3. When he told me everything he knows, I closed my account. When I spoke about this to my co-workers they all said that it has happened to them too. Just be very careful because you don't want to be overdrawn 50 cents and have to pay $30 in fees for the overdraft and then $6 everyday that you're overdrawn. No, I didn't have overdraft protection because up until that point I had never overdrawn.

Does anyone have any experience with M&I Bank? I got a flier in the mail but I haven't been able to find any reviews online.
