The irony of someone who has no ostensible connection to my native state but thinks they know more about Iowa politics than actual Iowans, yet offers no actual insight on the topic. That’s rich

Again, go home.

Or, take advantage of some of the holiday flight sales and come for a long weekend! Walk around, eat in the restaurants and talk to some of us face-to-face.

Honestly, there a big difference between the portrait painted of Iowans on threads like this and the reality. Other than a few political junkies, the rest of us really do have other concerns right now, and if you were here, you would see that.

I can't rep you any more, Meemur, but I think you've hit it on the head here. I think the political discussions in this forum are weird because they are often brought up and mostly perpetrated by out of state political junkies, so they don't really seem to reflect local character/opinions/concerns. I'm not deeply familiar with Iowa yet, but I do love the general feeling here in Des Moines that politics isn't emphasized much. I imagine that might change in the early parts of a presidential election cycle (maybe?) but for now I'm enjoying it. And I'm probably going to ignore all the "look it's an Iowa politics headline!" threads here to keep that feeling going.

The puzzling thing about all this hyperventilating about "out of state political junkies" is that the only message commenting specifically on Iowa politics is the OP. Some of the rest of us are simply challenging the bogus notion presented that Iowa - or any other state - turning away from today's Democratic party is a sign of declining education in the populace. It is much closer to the opposite.

Both major parties have been pushing average Americans away for a long time now. But the Democrats have been pushing much harder of late....in Iowa, and throughout America.

It does not take much to push Iowa rural mainstream away from democrats. It is not a matter of education, no education can trump self interest. Iowans need free from the federal regulations hands to extract maximum value from their farm lands and low taxes. Republicans promise them just that. It works like a charm almost every time.

Ya, low regulations work well for them until those same rural counties get sued by the city of Des Moines for excessive nitrate and fertilizer runoff from agricultural soils causing massive issues for water quality downstream..

Iowa farmers are far more reliant on federal handouts and regulations than most Americans. Look at the hue and cry over the recent Renewable Fuels Standard. Pulling that would have taken 40% of the corn market, which only survives by price supports for farmers and ethanol production; a worthless and costly product.

Iowa’s Swing to Republicans
Iowa’s status as a swing state in presidential elections may be in doubt. One key reason: not enough college graduates

What you fail to understand is that education doesn't make one smarter. It just means they went to some kind of supposed learning institution longer, which, imo, makes them dumber. Seriously, some of the damned dumbest people I've known have the most letters after their name. All that learning kills common sense.

Good, old-fashioned common sense is what separates the smart from the stupid. And smart people vote for what's real instead of what they imagine.

A college degree is an upper middle class privilege, in no way does it define a person nor decide if you are "uneducated" ..... Also, Trump is not necessarily a "Republican" ... Trump is an outsider and many were attracted to voting in someone different instead of , you know someone like Hillary.
