One factor I haven't seen mentioned is our caucus system. While I like it for the access it provides with politicians and how close it allows us to be to creating platforms, one of the major drawbacks is that you have to be available to attend during that hour or two long window and if you aren't, you are out of luck. As a result, only a tiny percentage of people actually attend the Republican caucus on caucus night and farmers and other population segments that favor Trump tend to be heavily represented.

In my precinct, there are something like 1200 registered voters. Out of around 500 or so registered Republicans, less than 100 have participated on caucus night as far back as I can remember. In fact, the last caucus in 2020, I was the only person who voted for someone else other than Trump in my precinct out of maybe 50 participants.

Some great viewpoints. Thank you for sharing.

As a kid I grew up about 5 miles from the IA border in SD. When he initally ran, I thought the idea of a NYC billionaire that was a former Democrat an absurd nominee. In that first round of prelims SD spoiled enough ballots to only give him 2 of the electorate instead of 3 as nobody else was running by that point. North Dakota decided to not hold a vote at all. MN stumped for Rubio and Trump really was a Southern and Northeastern Republican winner as opposed to the Midwest.

Different opportunities brought me to the liberal utopia (sarcasm) I'm at now. I will admit I'm hoping for a surprise win for either Haley or DeSantiss. For one thing, it would give us a chance at 8 years instead of 4. The other is the socialist forces here are agitated but mostly sleeping with Joe's win....but they're far from dead and frankly hoping for a Trump win to reawaken. The new inteligensia make just awful decisions, from defunding police groups, criminals run rampant, DAs refusing to punish crimes, rent controls and property restrictions, wealth taxes, benefits and the vote for illegal aliens.

California used to be purple. Today the top two parties are moderate and "progressive" Democrats and it's hard to know who is who. Republicans like myself now hide in the closets once used by the homosexuals, but the balance is slowly shifting again to the right as Gen Z looks at what's been done with a much more callous eye, but has only seen Trump and Bush as Republican leaders.

A less incendiary nomination might defuse the radicalization on the left. It might give the young a chance to see another way. Either way, good luck to you all at the polls. Iowa always has the lead dance and I hope it continues to take it seriously.

Also, there are undoubtedly people who do not want to divulge their support for someone other than Trump. Some of them will just stay home.

Trump wasn't a very good president because he wanted to be king. But he did less damage in his tenure than Biden has done so far. Trump had the challenge of covid dropping on him on purpose and did a lot of damage giving out money but that has kept the job rate so low still. Biden however is accelerating the the collapse of the dollar.

Trump was a very good President who didn't try to leverage the Covid lockdowns into a dictatorship like some foreign leaders and domestic governors and mayors did. Trump was all about getting back to normal as soon as possible.

I think that's why people in Iowa and the 49 other states are working for his return to the White House.

Slight revision of history, there. I recall then-President Trump bashing Governor's DeSantis and Kemp for reopening their states "too soon", as he said.

That said, we'll find out on Monday night just exactly how popular Mr. Trump is with Iowans.

Revision of history? I recall Trump in March 2020 hoping out loud that re-openings could begin "by Easter". He was raked over the coals for such positive thinking, which turned out to be too optimistic. And really, there was so much bashing of people opening too soon, and too late, and bashing over getting vaxxed vs. not getting vaxxed, and on and on. So much misinformation. I remember the comprehensive news conferences every single day with Trump, Pence, Fauci, Berks (sp?), and all the rest of the national characters plus my own local people.

But my main point is, he did not "go full Dictator" and leverage the lockdowns the way some people did. That's the history I'm most focused on, going forward.

Normal Iowans and other normal Americans understand nuance, know to check sources, and seek to educate themselves about science and national and international economics.

That you can't even call him by his name is telling. The hate is so strong and childish it's all consuming. Trump derangement syndrome is alive and very real.

I strongly dislike Biden but no need for childish name games.

People like Trump in Iowa because Trump is pro America, he's patriotic, he doesn't want the woke agenda, he wants America to put America first. These are all traditional down home middle America values that resonate.

All of that is true. But, I distinctly remember then-President Trump criticizing Governor's DeSantis and Kemp for reopening their states.

Mr. Trump leaves much to be desired, where the pandemic is concerned, and it would be nice if he would show some humility and say as such.
