Does anyone remember his budgets? He basically wanted to jack up USDA fees at meat plants and stop crop insurance and crop premium programs.

I understand there's more to decisions, but is Iowa no longer ag sensitive?

Direct farm aid climbed each year of Trump’s presidency, from $11.5 billion in 2017 to more than $32 billion in 2021.

Was that Trump or was that Congress? Honestly don't know.

I think you have to go back to the fact that t-Rump's main supporters are white males with only a high school or lower level of education and who also are on the lower levels of the economic spectrum. There are many such in Iowa.

I don't think it's t-Rump specific. Those men are just generally ANGRY that life isn't going the way they expected it to go, and that the world isn't the way they want it to look. They unite around the orange man because he's saying out loud all the things they want to say.

I doubt if they're even aware of most of his policies. If you ask them, as I have done, what specific things t-Rump did to Make America Great Again in his first term, they say things like "He made the world respect us again" (which is completely opposite from the truth) and "He is for traditional values" (who could possibly look at that man's life and believe that?)

They also hate some of the main Democratic platform issues, especially gun control.

The only thing that I could see that he actually accomplished that relates to traditional conservative values is to pack the Supreme Court with Catholics. There are many Catholics in Iowa.

His policies were definitely harmful to corn/soybean farmers. But I think the sociocultural issues are at the moment surpassing economic truths.

The number of farms has been steadily decreasing my entire life and I don't see it changing anytime soon. Combined with family sizes also on the decrease, Iowa is most definitely no longer ag sensitive. Don't get me wrong, our Congressman Grassley will always bring home what bacon he can to the farmers because it is popular to think of us as an agricultural state which we are by number of acres in ag, just not people.

As for your more general question of why Trump is popular here, I don't think there is any single answer. Among the Trump supporters I know, there is a general feeling of being neglected by typical Washington politicians which makes Trump and his non-conventional ways appealing. I think many of his supporters don't want to be part of the global world and so like his tendencies to withdraw troops, close borders, stick it to foreign governments when it comes to importing goods, etc. Many are concerned with taxes though honestly, I would guess the majority are part of the 50+ percent of our population who doesn't pay any net income taxes. I'm sure there are lots of other reasons as well.

I noticed one issue in Trump’s favor is his position on abortion. During his first run for the presidency this was very evident with several pro-life Iowa women I know who were very passionate and made no secret that “women who have abortions are murderers.”

Another thing I noticed over the years working with Iowans from rural areas is their devotion to Chuck Grassley who has been a public political figure forever and supported Trump.

Why is Trump so popular in Iowa?

I have no F'ing idea. I can't believe there is a slice of Iowa voters who adamantly feel he is the best all-around representative of the United States of America. I recall the days when Presidents (at least publicly) upheld and represented the most admirable characteristics of the country and it's people.

Disclosure: I'm registered "no party" in this state.

Donald Trump was a vigorous president and he is still very energetic and able to juggle 100 things at once and keep going forward. He's a fighter that lost half his personal fortune to be president, and refused his presidential salary. His scandals are of the type that if done by a democrat president, would have been downplayed, covered up and swept away. Bill Clinton comes to mind in this regard, he loved being president and making speeches, had charisma, and the economy did well under his watch, so people forgave his personal flaws, the scandals slid off his back, the impeachment went nowhere and he carried on like nothing happened. Good for Bill, good for Donald.

Illegal immigration has become such a big problem that even most democrats can now admit Trump had the right policy to solve the problem, and I hope they will allow him to proceed on this matter without the obstruction of funding he had in his first term, should he win, and I think he will.

Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon both lost their first run for president, and so will Ron DeSantis, but I think he has a good chance to be president someday, I like him. Iowans are not real keen on this transgender/pornography stuff in the schools, it has not been reported yet, but the Perry school shooter was a LGBQ trans activist with mental problems, as is often the case amongst trans kids. Ron has worked hard to suppress that in Florida schools and his fights with Disney. He has the support of Governor Reynolds and many Iowans, If Ron became the nominee, Iowa will support him in a landslide against Joe Biden.

t-Rump is popular among some Iowans and other people because they get a thrill when he and his shills use various trigger words to manipulate them:

Trans
Immigrants
Abortion
Guns

A certain sort of person is incited by these words to enough hysteria to participate in an insurrection against our nation. Would-be Emperor t-Rump and his shills know this quite well.

Normal Iowans and other normal Americans understand nuance, know to check sources, and seek to educate themselves about science and national and international economics.

You got that right. At his rallies, Trump receives the most whoops and hollers after he:

- tells an outrageous lie
- uses a demeaning nickname for a rival or former ally (who came to his/her senses later)
- makes a ridiculous unprovable boast that "only I can . . . . " or "It wouldn't have happened if I . . . ."
- dehumanizes and insults entire classes of people
- portrays many institutions - both public and private - as enemies

That these people fall for it is unbelievable to me.
