Now it's August and Jackson has at least 56 murders.

I want to hear from a Mississippian. Jackson's murder rate rivaled that of Baltimore. Jackson's murder rate looks like it might surpass that of Baltimore. Why do you think there is no national attention towards Jackson the way Baltimore has received that attention?

Jackson only has 170,000 or so people, but I would bet that once Jackson is named the nation's murder capital, the media attention will come.

I think state government should take over the police department in Jackson and maybe create a metro-area wide tax just to fund the Jackson police and expand it enough to achieve success rates such as are seen in New York.

New York has roughly 100 times as many officers as Jackson with just 50 times the population, and probably with just 30 or so times as many criminals when factoring in poverty rates. This would mean that if New York has only 30 times as many criminals but has roughly 100 times as many officers, that Jackson needs to make its police department 3 times larger, in order to achieve New York's success at reducing homicides.

Only the state government would have the will and management ability to succeed at doing this. Maybe once Jackson begins making headlines as the nation's murder capitol, politicians will finally begin to take action rather than sitting back and watching so many people being killed.

The homicides are actually at 58 currently. The difference in size , geography, & mainstream media perception in regards to homicide rates. Baltimore have been a very large city ( top ten in the 1800s) throughout it's history in comparison to Jackson. Jackson didn't grew into a metropolitan city into the 1930s. Additionally, Media perception of anything from Mississippi is typically broadcast in a rural fashion & the 50s/60s civil rights era cemented the mainstream public view of the state.

Therefore any national attention we received that doesn't revolve around the media stereotypes: Rascism, rural poverty, or policies in opposition to current event issues , etc.
Now when you bring themes attributed to large city issues like akin to Baltimore, NYC, or Chicago it doesn't register.

That would make sense. Same with Gary, Indiana. It has a murder rate very close to what Jackson has. It's population dipped from 102,746 in 2000 to 75,282 last year. Gary gets little attention, outside of being Michael Jackson's hometown. Even more ironic, 25 miles east of Downtown Chicago. I think this is why Jackson won't be named America's murder capital.

I don't know how state government intervenes in city police affairs. I know that this could be done for schools.

I know Mississippi has made headlines in the past for things like racism and poverty. I wonder if Jackson dealing with the embarrassment of a high murder rate might turn things around. St. Louis and Baltimore are still violent cities in spite of the embarrassing attention.

With New York, the police adopted to very aggressive policing strategies.

It's gone up in that case. Jackson is on pace to hit 100 murders.

Given that Mississippi's reputation has alot to do with the racism of the 1960s, and for good reason, then if national media got ahold of Jackson's murder problem, it would be a big shock to the rest of the USA. And Mississippi is a red state. Some people in other states would use it as a whipping boy.

Birmingham, AL doesn't even get much attention for its murder rate either. The last time it was in the public conscious was in the 1960s, mainly for the same reason Mississippi was.

Baltimore and St. Louis weren't getting that much attention until both cities ended up with riots.

Actually it's about on pace as previous year , 78, or lower since July was rather pleasant per say with 1 homicide. It's when the weather cools down that's cubersome.

I think it's going to shock those unfamiliar mostly on the coasts than Midwest. The city was rough when it was "Blue" state.

Bingo on B'Ham too. It depends on the media coverage of the 70s-90s of St.Louis & Baltimore.

The linked article says that Mississippi is 30% black. The US Census says it's 37.8%. That's quite a bit of difference.
