Forgive my ignorance. I am a contract employee at a large corporation. They have lost many employees due to dissatisfaction from a recent merger. I hear talk of not being able to fill needed positions due to outside recruits having no interest due to non competitive salary etc. I am seeing it as an opportunity to get on direct with them. Me, I would be GLAD to work directly for them and I would be glad to have the salary others are turning down to come here apparently.

I am thinking of applying to the company directly but I need to know if it is proper or ok to discuss it. I mean, would it be ok if I were to just simply ASK my manager about it and let him know I am interested if anything were to be available that I could get? Or does discussing that breach some sort of contractor/employer protocol/etiquette?

Once again, I don't have any experience in such things.

Any insight would be MOST appreciated. Thanks.

You should understand your performance at work, first, and then decide whether to ask. If your performance is good, ask for obvious reasons.

I had an ex-colleague that joined a media and entertainment company as an contractor, and was doing a good job (got feedback from his manager). He asked to get hired on permanently and they moved with an offer quickly.

Hank,

Usually ya gotta fill the requirements of the contract before you can hire on directly. In my line of work, that can be anywhere between 30 days and a year.

Ifya deviate from that, the employer typically forks over dough to the contract agency (temp service), so you can start sooner.

If you've fulfilled the time requirement, then usually they can hire you on immediately....a week or two.....

Go ahead and ask your boss.

You can ask but the company will have to pay a finders fee to the agency which could be tens of thousands of dollars depending on the terms agreed to between the agency and corp. If they are to cheap to pay a competitive wage to attract candidates they are probably to cheap to pay a finders fee.

A lot of large corporations don't ever hire their contractors permanently even going so far to hire a less qualified external candidate. They consider you a second class citizen to be used and abused. I worked like that for 3 years before finding a much better job and quitting.

it can't hurt to ask. they might say no, they might say they have to wait til their contract with the agency is up (this happened to me - i didn't ask though, i was offered the job as soon as the contract period ended), they might make you apply as an external applicant, they might say yes. i don't see how it would be a problem if you asked.
