A non-compete clause cannot limit you from pursuing your occupation. You really need to read your copy of the agreement, typically it can only be enforced when there are business secrets or industry contacts involved. In CA they are enforceable in very limited circumstances.

Not so in NY, FL and many other states. They can damn near legitimately prevent you from working in a related industry that would overlap with the same client base.
Like many n this thread, I would go along with laid-off over fired.
But, the reason for this post, I wanted to add, never, under any circumstances, say you didn't get along with your boss, that your boss hated you, or there was mutual dislike. Never.
Almost every unsuccessful person will always blame others and the typical one is "<fill in the blank> hates me". It is a huge red flag indicating that you can't even recognize your own problems. In your case, I am sure it is all about the fact your boss hated you but the person interviewing you will not believe you as much as I do. He just does not have as big a heart as I.
Y'all sitting down??.....I just got a call from my old job( that fired me without cause)recruiters for my old position as a contract worker. I was like "do you know you are trying to fill me in the job I was just let go from last week" she was like yes I know because that is why I am calling you, would you be interested in going back in as a contract worker under a different manager other than the one you had a problem with?
I was like SUCK IT..just kidding,I told her I don't know that was pretty upsetting what I just went through. She said she could talk to her boss. I told her if she has anything else from any other company's to let me know...ALRIGHTY THEN...
What do you guys think that was about?
I would find out who your new manager would be first, and then consider it. Most people do not quit the company, they quit their boss. If the boss was the only issue then it wouldn't be a bad thing to mull over.
Whoever is interviewing you will push for elaboration. Laid off is Laid off end of discussion.
