I remember those strategically located boxes also. The mail man had a key to open the box. He would take out the mail and put it in a big leather side pouch and would work out of that pouch delivering to each house.

Other postal employees, I think, would drive trucks to those boxes and deposit the mail for the carrier.

It seemed like every urban mail man walked back then right up to your front door and would work out of those centrally located boxes.

We have delivery to a mail box on the sidewalk in front of our house. Two adjacent houses have to have their boxes together. It appears that all new areas have all mail boxes in a designated place on block corners or at a designated place within the subdivision.

And the font color of Olive Drab is duly noted.

Hmmm interesting. If that would be late 1940s, my Mom's beauty shop was a block away. Do you know who is the person in the photo?

EDIT: Well apparently so, just now seeing the Extra Credit Question . . . .btw, yes, EC for the olive drab font. MAD now has over 100%.

Margaret Truman, Ginger Rogers, my Mom ?

It was taken during the war years. The gal worked at the store. It wasn't Margaret, Ginger, nor yo' momma. It isn't my momma or M-I-L either. My Beloved's mother worked there and took this photo.

It looks like a service station across the street (gas pump). Winstead's didn't look to be around during the time frame MAD gives to the photos, but would have been on the opposite of where the billboard stood I believe when it did open for business.
