Varies highly from year to year. Some winters very little snow will fall and others you might get over 30 inches. It is a small amount of snow compared to the core of the Midwest and Great Lakes, though. AWD is not necessary as it definitely is not the Snowbelt at all. However, roads are not cleared as well either and they like to shut things down over "dustings" of snow.

The 50-year average is around 20" of snow. However, this winter and the last, we've had barely enough snow to cover the ground. Two years ago we had 45". Often we have ice first, then snow.

KC gets its share of snow/ice but also has one of sunniest winters of midwest cities. Get nice breaks from winter at times too. Is about 75 today. But will be back down to 30s this week, then to 50s. So it bounces around.

I would say in an AVERAGE winter, we might have two pretty good snowfalls (at least 5 inches) maybe 3 less than that, and a couple "dustings." Throw in a freezing rain/sleet event, and every few years, a full-blown ice storm. Of course the past three years have not resembled that at all.

Well, you would be correct that KC weather in general is NOTHING like the vast majority of the Midwest. Much warmer climate, lower latitude, and more intense sunlight/heat. The Upper Midwest has a climate more to my liking. Yes, winters are colder, but that is because its supposed to be winter. The other three seasons are fairly mild overall. 30s and 40s are mild to me. Below 20F is colder.

Yeah, there are four seasons in KC, but they ARE TOTALLY DIFFERENT than the REAL MIDWEST.
They even have different names that are more "sunbelty/southern" like: Binter, Bring, Bummer and Ball. Seriously.
THERE ARE NO SIMLIARITIES between weather in Kansas City and the regions immediately abutting it. No matter what the Koppen Climate Classifications would lead you to believe:

And how old is that Koppen Climate Classification map? It seems nearly obsolete these days based on the amount of warming already occurring in most zones. The plant hardiness zones have shifted dramatically northward in the last 20 years alone. The zone is based on the lowest minimum temperature that a location would expect to record each winter season. I've lived in many parts of the Midwest so I know the regional variations. That pale blue shading in southern Wisconsin has a climate that is very different from the light blue shading in Missouri and Kansas. Averages and Extremes for Madison, WI today: High: 27 Low: 11 Records: High 54 (2013) Low: -37 (1951).
I haven't ever found lows as cold as -37F in the Lower Midwest before so I will take the validity of that Koppen Climate Classification map with a grain of salt with its boundaries.
