I think he meant Waimea Kauai not Waimea Big Island...

IIRC, they were trying to put in a skate park in Waimea...I don't think it really got anywhere. I think there may be a skate park in Kapaa, but I can't remember. But skateboarding is somewhat popular here- although not nearly as popular as surfing

I guess the Kauai position didn't pan out so the latest openings are on the BI.

There is a skate park in Waimea (Kamuela). It is in the big town park where they have the wooden play set for the kids. Behind the baseball fields. There's usually at least a few skateboarders zipping around on it.

Just to help sort out a bit of confusion, the post office in Waimea on the Big Island couldn't use the name "Waimea" since there were already too many of them in the state (there's one on Oahu, too) so they had to pick a different name. Technically, there is no town named Kamuela. Kamuela is the post office in the town of Waimea on the Big Island, in case anyone is wondering. We also have two Ninole's on this island, too, but I think only one of them has a post office.

Is there any reasonable motels close to Waimea to rent while checking the job market and home shopping and visiting friends?

I'm not sure what your standard for reasonable is, but I used "under $100" on hotels.com and found several, one as low as $61, but those were all 20 miles from Waimea. Spending more didn't seem to get you any closer, so you may as well rent a car and drive in. Good luck with your search.

Waimea doesn't have any hotels or motels, only the very nice and expensive Plantation Cottages. Hanapepe doesn't either, the closest is in Poipu, and those are expensive too. The $60 rates that were quoted are probably the Garden Island Inn near the port near Lihue, so 35-45 minutes away.

There are probably vacation rentals in Waimea and in Kekaha that you could negociate a monthly rate with the owner once you find them on vrbo.com or whereever. Those aren't popular tourist lodging areas, so they are cheaper. There are rentals in Kalaheo, too, but those are more desirable and probably more expensive.
