Thanks for those town suggestions! . We're hoping our future kids would be students at the Red Bird School.

One of the benefits of having 120 counties in Kentucky is that educators in the smaller counties are actually known, appreciated, and respected by most of the population. I expect you would be fine if you found a nice home near Red Bird and chose to live there.

I saw this thread just browsing through recent topics on the forum, and there is something I am curious about and I think this is something the OP would want to know.

Does the area have many people who aren't from there and how open is it to people not from the area?

Great question Jowel. It's something obvious I hadn't thought about.

It’s not an area with a lot of folks from out of the area but the OP will have a ready made community with Red Bird school and the church. People in Eastern Kentucky are generally respectful towards their teachers. I think the OP will be just fine.

Few true transplant but many people there moved away for their prime working years then returned home. Many lived in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. At one time is was a major coal mining area and had a good number of foreign immigrants. Harlan city is 7% Black population.

I would mention that just across the Cumberland Gap tunnel there is Harrogate TN (small college town) and Lee Co VA. Having extended family in the area I'd guess Lee Co VA is more affluent than the KY or TN areas of the Gap.

Rural KY has some surprisingly good school districts in places you wouldn't expect. Problem is those good students don't return after college. There are a lot more good schools throughout the state than good jobs.

Oldhag: is there a nearby LCMS church? (We'd willingly travel an hour or so)

Reading the thread, and thinking about how Covid has warped my time perception: my don is 1 already! I know it doesn't fundamentally change any advice, but it's embarrassing anyway.
