Roan Mountain,TN.
Hi Folks,
Wondering if anyone out there has any info or reference to Roan Mountain, TN. We were there this past weekend and found the National Park to be very beautiful! It is in the Northeast sector of Tennessee.
Looking for property and thought perhaps this might be a nice place to retire to.
Is property expensive here?
What about taxes, etc.
Would really appreciate any and all info.
Thank you very much!

Hi,
I used to live in Western NC and had a friend who was a pastor in Roaring Creek at Roan Mountain. He said the area was an unusual mix. It was mostly wealthy, celebrity types who had summer homes there (Tom Selleck was one), and people on government assistance. Very small middle class.
Of course there was a smattering of retirees, like most NC mountain communities now.
I don't know where you are coming from, but just know that the mountain communities are very clannish and slow to accept outsiders.
It is a beautiful area though with four legitimate seasons (quite a bit of snow).
Good luck.

Roan Mountain is the most gorgeous place on the earth for rhododendron, mountain laurel and azaleas. Mmmm, I can't wait for spring now!

There are 3 Roan Mountains: a mountain, a state park, and also a small town.
They're all part of Carter County (where I live) and yes, it's gorgeous - great hiking trails, nice little town, etc.
There are some places for sale, but they're not cheap. The low priced ones with acreage = the acreage is more or less vertical - a steep hill behind the house.
But keep looking and you'll find something nice eventually.

It is very pretty there and it is where we go to get our Christmas tree. My wife works with someone who's father has a Christmas tree farm on Roan Mountain and thus has begun our newest Christmas tradition of driving up to Roan Mountain and cutting our own tree.
