"historic" in-town homes

I lived in Fountain City up until 1999. I don't think you'll have any trouble finding nice houses there in your stated price range. In fact, you'll probably have a fair chunk of change left for renovations - and renting a dumpster to empty the garage of junk from the previous owner:P.

North Knoxville - I believe Fountain City doesn't really start until you're north of I-640 - will have lots of bungalows, but garages are less common in my experience.

If you go looking in the most picturesque neighborhoods like 4th and Gill I think you may run up against some historic preservation restrictions, so there's that to consider. It's one thing to hem and haw about how you want your house to look, and another entirely to have some committee tell you you can't have what you want. I get downright unreasonable when that happens.
