There is a tree currently blooming that has pink tulip-like petals. Maybe 4 or 5 petals per bloom and the tips of the petals are sharper than a tulip. If I find a pic of them, I'll post it.

Does anybody know what these are? They're usually one of the first trees to bloom in March. tia

I think you may be talking about the Purple Magnolia also known as a Tulip Tree.

thanks for the reply tim. On pics that I find on google, the purple magnolia leaves seem to be a little longer than the ones I've seen.

Here's what wikipedia has for the Purple Magnolia. Pretty close:

There are several of the ones I'm talking about along Kingston Pike between campus and Western Plaza -- one near Concord/K.P. bus stop.

Here's a pic that comes closest. The leaves are shorter. This is apparently the Magnolia × soulangeana (a hybrid):

Just a quick thought. We often inquire about the weather in a given place and this thread made me think in a different light. The blooming of Bradford pear trees in my yard is at least 3 to 4 weeks from now, even though we live only about 500 miles northeast. Knox doesn't seem far away but there is an obvious difference in climate.
