Believe it. I was talking to a store owner in the old MGM Grand (Now Bally's). They claim to have paid the executives at the hotel $500,000 for a location in the shopping center in the basement. That was 1973.

Not really...They are marketed more toward families largely due to the better schools (generally) that they feed into. Vegas isn't a tremendously sprawling metro area in comparison to many cities with similar populations. I lived as a single in the Summerlin area for 11 years and never had difficulty meeting other singles and actually I seldom had to leave Summerlin for anything unless heading down to the Strip or airport. I found it VERY easy to meet people and generally people always seemed game for a night out. Vegas is a fun place to live if you like to go out!

Do you mean in Nevada? Education is not "de-emphasized" in Nevada. Education is in the news all day everyday. How to pay for it is the question. The Clark County School District is the 5th largest in the U.S. Other county school districts in Nevada are pretty small, but they don't have any money either. When cuts have to be made in your home budget, do you look at trimming things that you might be able to do without, or do you say the kids "really need" those cell phones, and $200 skateboards?

IMHO we have let the fox guard the hen house for too long. We need legislators that will stand up to casino owners and make them pay a "fair" share. We don't have to rob them like other states do, but it's laughable what they pay compared to other states.

I can't blame the teachers for the kids' performance either, like everyone else does. I blame it on PC-ism by administrators. They put kids with all kinds of mental problems in with the "normal" students and it brings everyone else down. Then the idiot parents of these slow learners are catered to when they, the parents, are the real problem. Then you have the little bas*ards that are given 12 years to learn something useful, and they don't even try because it's not "macho" or something to actually learn the language and become successful in life. They need to learn that a real man (woman) isn't an ignorant scumbag that depends on a gang of other ignorant street scumbags ...a real man (woman) is one that takes responsibility despite the difficulties life throws at them and looks after themselves and their family.

This is so true....these casinos and places like the City Center come in with plans to serve hundreds of thousands of people or house 50 thousand people, but they don't want to pay for the needed fire or police, or contribute to the community for schools. The tax payers are expected to foot the whole bill.

Cronous81,

Are you retiring? Looking for a change? What kind of job are you looking for, as I'd think in Arlington, VA/Washington DC, you'd have a pretty good one.

I well away from retiring maybe in another 30-35 years lol. And yes I have an awesome job in the DC area that is well paid/secure. Recent changes, however, will allow me to work my job anywhere in the US so I am thinking of moving to a unique place that is relatively warm and has low taxes.

I need a job like that! I've been thinking of going to the DC area for the good jobs...but would prefer Vegas for living.

Does it seem that a lot of DC jobs are having more and more 'work from home' options, especially as your traffic seems to be becoming brutal by national standards?

(Nontheless, nice move!)

I think it entirely depends upon the job. When I first started this job years ago I never thought I would be able to Telework like I can now. A lot of this stuff does seem to just come out of the blue. However, I did notice in the DC area that the federal govt is trying to become more Telework friendly. However, I presume they would be limited by the whether the job requirements could be met by teleworking.
