Be very careful about anyone who uses weight in any way to figure you charge. When I left Vegas I had a quote for $1600 which sounded good. We went over all my stuff and it seemed a reasonable estimate. Move gets made and I get a $3800 bill! Company said I was way overweight. Had this lady been halfway truthful about how much stuff weighs I would have realized other companies were a better deal for me. She even admitted it on the phone, saying if I gave you a quote near your actual weight you would have chosen another company. Total bait and switch, but frankly its a signed contract and you can't get out of that fee.

Moral of the story is realize there are a lot of shady companies out there with tricks on things like weighing items so packing your own truck and driving it yourself will almost always work better. I'd even be careful with some of the pod moving companies because they will sneak in hidden fees and surcharges you really can't do anything about after all your stuff is moved and you have this huge bill you didn't expect.

Whatever you do, read articles at movingscam.com before choosing a company. There are many sharks in the moving waters. Be informed or be a victim.

I have always had more luck with Penske than UHaul if you go that route. Penske always gave me a better rate, mileage and even gave some freebies like no fee for the dolly and threw in some minor moving supplies.

I have heard good things about ABF for the cross country moves.

I used Penske too when I moved from NC to here. Better rates and better trucks imo. Never used an actual moving company so can't help ya there! Good luck with the move!

I used Atlas Van Lines, was satisfied with the service overall. The odd broken/missing item here and there, but that happens. My house wasn't ready to move into when I got here, so the mover stored my stuff for me for a reasonable price. They recommended storing it in my city of origin because the storage fees were lower than Las Vegas.

That said, if I had it to do over again I would have sold a lot of my stuff before I moved. I wound up replacing a lot of it the first year I was here, and I could have saved a bunch of money.

We've moved long distances a number of times. Haven't been crazy about U-Haul (multiple breakdowns in inconvenient areas) or Ryder (leaked rain onto our furniture) trucks, but Penske has done well by us.

Note that you can also hire local people (on both sides of the move) to carry your stuff to and from the truck. Just google for something like "local movers" and see if they do that. Pretty nice after a long drive.

I believe that federal law requires interstate shippers to charge by weight so all the major movers will use weight as the basis for its charges. However, some companies use binding estimates and some use non-binding estimates in determining how much the move will cost. Your problem apparently stemmed from the fact that you didn't get a binding estimate in advance.

I agree; movingscam.com is an excellent resource. I would only add that you need to be aware that you can't simply rely on a good review for say United Van Lines or Mayflower. There may be a "good" Mayflower shipper in one location and a "bad" Mayflower shipper in another location. Make sure to get a good review/recommendation for the specific shipper that you plan to use.

Not sure about that movingscam.com ... they may have good information but I wonder about the way they link to the websites of companies they recommend. That is: instead of a direct link to the recommended company's website, the link passes through something on movingscam.com (to use the less technical description). This would usually allow them to track how many people clicked on a given link ... which makes me wonder whether they're recommending companies out of the goodness of their hearts, or getting paid for it.

Which is not to say that getting paid for advertising is a bad thing, or that they (or anyone else, really) would recommend companies they don't believe in. I'd just prefer any such relationships to be clear, that's all.
