I don't gamble but I sure do appreciate those who do. For, the way I see it, they subsidize many of the things I like about Las Vegas.

Vegas has turned itself into a great party town, with gambling. This is not unintentional. They saw a market developing and grabbed it. Since gambling has greatly proliferated across the country and world as this was happening (giving gamblers a lot more alternatives), this was probably not a bad idea.

IMO, the youngest generation, which can legally gamble at this point, don't seem that attracted to it. They would rather spend their thousands drinking and partying in Las Vegas, than in the casinos. I think they look at gambling as an old-person's sport.
Or, maybe they've taken a probability and statistics course?

Food and Beverage accounts for more than half of a casino's revenue these days. As long as they keep coming and spending, who cares how they spend it?

People find ways to spend money on the strip. It's not hard at all.

A good friend of mine came to visit Vegas after a year deployment. He wanted me and some others to show him a good time for 3 days. Fri-Sun. His budget was $7,000. No gambling at all. He hates it and says that it's "lame an wack". So he did the night club, VIP, strip club, shows, buffets, fine dinning, limo ride, shopping, pool party, front of the line passes, giving $20 to a homeless guy, champaign popping thing. Not one single $$ in a machine or on a table.

We showed him a good time and all the money he intended to spend was spent.

To each his own. My husband and I budget for gambling. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose but we always have a great time. If we lose what was budgeted for gambling we quit. Most of the time we are able to gamble up to the last day. Yes, we are old 55 and 64.

Several years ago my husband and I did a "cheesy Vegas weekend" date. We watched the Blue Man group, and stayed at the NY NY. We had a great time. Vegas is a great place to visit- even when you live here.

I don't gamble and honestly don't see the appeal. I am too logical-minded and see it as a waste of money and time. It also bugs me when some people brag about how much they win, when they actually don't win anything, or at least much. Like a friend telling me she put a $20 in a slot machine and won $50. No, she actually won $30 (then put it all back in the machine and eventually ended with nothing). Or a friend who went last fall and said she won $800 when she played $1000. She didn't actually WIN $1000, she lost $200!

I think I take all the fun out of it by thinking too much, but I do accounting for a living so I can't help but think in numbers! I'd rather spend my money elsewhere.

Now, OTOH, I have a few gambling games on my phone that I like to play, but that's not real money so it's fun!
