unfortunately I have never had the opportunity to taste "new york style" chinese food but, I did live in LA for a couple of years and worked at a chinese restaurant there. Whenever folks from back east came in to eat they always complained that it wasn't the same like New York.
I think the way Chinese food on the west is cooked is delicious!
If you are going to indulge in chinese food here, you might have to forget about the "new york" way and open yourself up to our way of cooking it. Unfortunately I've been a west coaster my entire life and I have never heard of any restaurants on this side of the country that cook it your way....sorry . Maybe I'm wrong but, good luck in your search!

!
And unless you speak Chinese, or go with someone who does,
you may still have not eaten really good Chinese food, even in LA.
And someone could probably make a valid point that unless you've eaten
Chinese in San Francisco, you STILL havent!

YES! the best Chinese food can be found in the Richmond District of SF or China Town. Oakland also has very good Chinese restaurants.

well, I haven't had San Francisco chinese food but, I am sure it is delicious also!
But, is it like the "new york" chinese food that Mom2Five is looking for?

My point was that, she probably wasn't going to find the kind of chinese food she was looking for around these parts, and unfortunately San Francisco is a bit far from here.
But, I will defnintely have to try San Francisco's if I am ever out that way!

I have many Chinese friends in SF and they tell me its the best Chinese food outside of Mainland China. I also found out that there is a large Taiwanese population there and they have a different style also... I think I like the Schezwan and Cantonese cooking better than Mandarin. I love Hong Kong style Dim Sum too!

There is exceptional Chinese food in Los Angeles. I had a good chinese friend by the name of Charlie Sie. Charlie considered the LA Chinatown food as good as any in the US...and Charlie knew.

I ate with Charlie and wife on many ocassions and in those Restaurants on my own.

The best chinese food I had was in Tokyo where I once attended a very big fancy corporate affair done as a chinese meal. Even used an absolutely delicious flavored Sake like nothing I have had before or since.

I think from my limited knowledge that Chinese is actually a wide and varied cuisine of many different types. There is no single best Chinese. And, while I like NY Chinese, I much prefer some of the LA varieities.

And if you ever come across one...the cooking of Macau, a chinese/portugese hibred, is absolutely wonderful. The only way to eat catfish.

As a finale virtually every small town in Canada has a chinese restaurant...and they serve almost nothing chinese. If you get lucky you may find Chow Mein...but that is it. Spaghetti and hamburgers are more likely.

Vancouver BC has a large Chinese population, and they also call it Hongcouver because most of the immigrants are from Hong Kong. I hear the food is awesome there too! But I will have to try the New York style one day..when I take a trip to the East.

There are actually three or four styles in the NY way. Best at neighborhood places. You need a local who likes it....

Yes, from what I've heard it's really varied. The restaurant I worked for specialized in Shanghai style.
The catfish was great also. I could eat a whole thing by myself...LOL. The take the entire fish and fry it , head and all, and serve it with sweet and sour sauce and cilantro.
great...now I'm hungry.

I think there are two clues:
first, if they look at you like they are worried you might be from immigration, and
two, nothing on the menu has any resemblance to what you think of as Chinese
food -
You've probably found the right place.
