Hi, I will likely be moving away from where I now am in the next couple of years (currently live in S.F. bay area, CA). I don't yet know for sure where I will be headed, -but Las Vegas has been one possibility and I want to plan ahead.

I am wondering what are good areas or areas to avoid in the urbanized part of the metro region. -I plan to rent and do not want to live in a rural or outlying area. -I would much prefer a single family home, and could spend about 1200 to possible 1400$ a month for rent (the latter would be a stretch). I would prefer pedestrian friendly but that is not essential, I also don't mind ethnic diversity even if I would be a minority (I am of European decent) as long as the area is safe. -So what are some good areas of the valley and areas to avoid?

I am sure you meant 1200-1400.

Areas to avoid are:

-East and north of downtown Las Vegas. Avoid cross streets of MLK and Lake Mead, Fremont and Eastern.
-NE Las Vegas near Nellis Air Force, high crime dont go
-Areas near the Boulevard Mall. Don't live with these square block area: Paradise Rd, Desert Inn, Maryland Parkway and Flamingo. There we have all older apartment complexes with high crime and drug use.
-Areas near the Stratosphere Casino. To its west is very rough and some areas in its east.

Rather safe and close to urban core areas (the strip):
-Near the Palms Casino
-Spring Valley area. Look within square area of Spring Mnt Rd , Rainbow, Decatur and Tropicana Ave.
-Near UNLV but east of Maryland Parkway and south of Flamingo Rd, reasonable and close to University
-A small area south of downtown, east of the strip and north of Sahara Ave is pretty good and very close to urban core and older houses.

Of all of the above, I would look in Spring Valley (southwest part of area)

Thanks for the info! And yeah, I did mean 1200-1400$ per month. -I edited my OP.

I would not recommend that area. The area is okay during the day, but I would not want to live there. I would look further west.

Both areas are the same. Be prepared for crime.

I highly disagree with that. The areas I have lived in have had hardly any crime compared to other parts of town. Sure, the possibility is there but imo, where you live is very important. It's kind of like winning the lottery. Buying more tickets increase your odds just like living in less desirable neighborhoods increase your odds for crime.

Not to mention what kind of neighborhood you live in is important. I live in a quiet neighborhood where crime would stand out and anything out of the ordinary would get a police call.

Crime is not equally averaged out between all areas. Usually it's concentrated in certain areas.

I think that needs to be updated. It says 2007.

On another note, something like this should should be what we post when someone makes a thread about best areas in Vegas to live.

Straight to the point. Or make it a sticky.
