They can easily live on $14,000 a year because of no house payment. That is the only way to make it work. They seem to be quite satisfied with the way they are living now so no side job is wanted and/or needed.

The family is living as frugal as possible but definitely not making as much as possible. The guy should have went to school while still on active duty(free) then passed his GI Bill to his children or Spouse.

That's what I did. Finished my degree while still in, now I don't even need my GI Bill. Kids are set for college.

So are we talking no government subsidies at all? What about about earned income credit that would give them a tax "refund" over and above what was withheld. Surely these people pay no income taxes under our current system and are therefore subsidized by those that do.

For now, but they do admit to wishing they had some type of retirement in place or more emergency funds. All the frugalness in the world won't take the place of making more income to put towards retirement and investments.

I'm curious to know what this $28,000 house looks like.

Sounds like a rap song I heard on the radio recently.

♫I make it, I spend it♫
♫I make it, I spend it♫

Can you get the Earned Income Tax Credit with no Earned Income? The IRS implies not.

Do it the other way, and eventually you have all the money you need (and then some) and you don't have to work any harder to get it.

Don't you know? Living in Las Vegas is like being on vacation every day of the year!

I have all the money I need (and then some) I just enjoy what I have and enjoy doing what makes me happy. I don't hurt anyone and don't ask of anything from anyone else and that's just the way I like it! Shouldn't we be enjoying our retirement funds before we're too old? We're due to receive a sizeable inheritance as well, which is kind of sad. To have that much and do nothing with it until you're dead and can't. Not for me...
