My wife and I are doing this.

Our mortgage is $300, our electric vehicle is essentially free when (lack of) fuel cost is taken into account
We're avid couponers as well, and get some amazing deals at local markets (pasta for 29 cents, liter of soy milk for 28 cents, luna bars for 11 cents, etc.)

No land line, Ting Cell phone = $6/mo
No cable TV, just Netflix and Roku = $7/mo
Free entertainment thanks to Gofobo, LVFreemovies, ShowTicketsForLocals, etc.
No credit card debt

It's totally doable if you don't fall victim to the trap of consumerism

Does this article explain how they pay for healthcare? Maybe I didn't read it correctly. How about when an emergency does come up and they have to use a credit card? How will they pay that back on their budget? They should have a savings account to pay for emergencies instead of using a credit card. How about if the car breaks down..etc..

Sounds good til you look more closely. Yes, they reject consumerism, but if everyone did this,
"Hello Gigantic Depression". If people all tried to live this way, spending on almost nothing, then
our economic system would collapse.

Besides, why not get a side job for extra income, than try to force yourself to survive
on an arbitrary-set amount of $14,000? They are 'alive', but not really living.

I agree to most of what you are saying. I would prefer to live a little more comfortable than that but why not try to make as much money as possible and living as frugal as possible and put those extra funds towards retirement or investments that work well. You also have to have a backup plan when something serious happens.

"Las Vegas family of four lives well on $14,000 a year". The live part I can agree with and understand. The "well" part is where I disagree? No vacations...ever?
