I was thinking about this, and it slapped me upside the head. A family of four living on $14K, would probably be eligible for Medicaid. Either that or he still get Tricare under hi GI benefits (or not, I'm not sure how that works.)

We're avid couponers as well, and get some amazing deals at local markets (pasta for 29 cents, liter of soy milk for 28 cents, luna bars for 11 cents, etc.)

No land line, Ting Cell phone = $6/mo
No cable TV, just Netflix and Roku = $7/mo
Free entertainment thanks to Gofobo, LVFreemovies, ShowTicketsForLocals, etc.
No credit card debt

It's totally doable if you don't fall victim to the trap of consumerism

if you actually think a family of 4 can live on 14k without any help or subsidies, i think you are mistaken. I suppose they could live on D street or something of that nature, but i wouldn't subject my family to that.

plus if he was on tour with the military... he gets a salary and i'm sure its more than 14k a year... and what about housing while they were saving? they also had paid for vehicles..

without it... 600 mo. cheap apt (7200) utilities 60 mo (720) 2 vehicle insurance 100 mo (1200) gas 50 mo (600) hulu and netflix 21 mo (253) internet 50 mo.. (600)... hmm so far.. 10473. family of 4 food less than 3600 a year.... doubt it... and what if they had to go to the doctor.. there's more to the story...

Actually they invested over 60K upfront to allow themselves to live for a few years on 14K.

And I would agree it more live than live well.

Living below the poverty line is doable by some...but it is not pleasant and involves trades off on a number of fronts.

Change the part I highlighted with $300 a year in property taxes on a paid off house. It drastically changes the picture.

I'm curious to know what this $28,000 house looks like.

Here's the house they bought for $28K. It's 1344sf, built in 1988 and it's in Henderson. It's not a bad house to hold up in for 4 years vs renting a property and spending an un-recoupable $28K on rent. Also once he finishes college, there is potential rental income from this little house if they decide to keep it.

The pasta deal was $1 Barilla coupon, which most Target stores have for either $1.19 or $1.29

I frequent tons of coupon sites like Krazy Coupon Lady, Organic Deals, Mambo Sprouts, etc. The key is to hang on to the coupons until the item goes on sale, then buy as many as you think you'll use before they expire (stockpiling). We've got 3 years worth of pasta in our pantry
