The tourism numbers for June have been released and they are not good. Casinos started opening on June 4th, so I want to see what July is like since it would be the first full month of casinos being open.

Las Vegas-area tourism officials marked another index of the economic effect of the coronavirus pandemic, with a report that the number of visitors during June was down 70.5% from the same month a year ago. (Las Vegas AP)

Shocking! I really expected the numbers to rival last year. Seriously!? Come on Katie! We all know this. I predict July numbers will be really awful too. You heard it here first. I predicted it and didn't even need a video or a dead comedian to tell me that!

You mean they weren’t higher than last year? Actually the numbers are better than they thought they would be.

I think times like this force change and progress. If you look back historically change is shaped by times of hardship. Right now our tourism and industry is crippled. We all have been saying we need something else in Las Vegas. I believe this could be the time for this. Industries and business will pop up that do not rely on tourism. If there is a void, something will fill it. It will hurt, but it could bring change to our city.

Never going to happen unless you have a plan - which local and state government do not. Until you have a better educated and larger workforce and some Mechanism for incubating small business and recruiting larger firms, Vegas will be a tourism city.

We know where the priorities are when we helped supplement the Raiders stadium and built more convention space.

The NY Times has an opinion piece by Jerry Seinfeld about New York City. I believe a lot of the same sentiment applies to Las Vegas. It's why conventions will come back to LV eventually, why bachelor parties will come back, why tourists from around the world will come back, etc.... Just change from NYC to LV and I think it fits! Behind paywall but you get a few freebies a month.

I agree with everything you said above and would add to your last point the inability to get a medical school building built for UNLV in a timely fashion. The ROI for the projects you mention in your post are negative at this point, and I do not see that changing for quite some time. Unfortunately, public priorities and governmental leadership here reflect the values of the population as a whole, and having lived here for quite a while, I do not like the trend I have been seeing the last few years.

If you don't like it you can leave

Just kidding, but what do you suggest be done?

I don't see things changing much unfortunately

It requires a long term vision and political will that does not care about short term election cycles or glad handing or kickbacks from developers for monument projects.

Politicians love building things because it’s an edifice to their
Greatness and shows results.

If you really wanted to do something ambitious, take the 800 million for the raiders stadium and put it hiring the best and brightest tech/business minds as short term professors for UNLV, lure them with equity
In all of companies they help develop and give free tuition and start up capital to students who reside here for 2-4 years after they graduate. I would heavily recruit outside of LV to get the best possible students.

Sure, the failure rate would be high, but it would plant a few seeds that could potentially pay off down the road. And more importantly attract the right people to come here if it does have some
Success

Economic diversification is a long term strategy and you've got politicians who don't care beyond their next election and an electorate whose primary goal is to keep their taxes as low as possible, thus there will be little to no investment.

If you believe technology is an economic driver for the future then I wouldn't expect an area with schools ranking in the bottom 10% to do very well. Companies can't hire well in those areas. Educated people who work for those companies often don't want to relocate their kids to areas with those types of schools.
