Huh?

With no pardon offered.

Shouldn't the Union bear some responsibility for delivering Qualified, trained [including job safety] Union members to a job site?

Or do the dues just go towards lining the Sec/Treasurers pockets?

Boy, everyone sounds like a bunch of cry baby Electricians, bitching over who moved their ladder. Bottom line at city center; too many trades in such a small area. Everyone is on a deadline.Two... when have you heard an interpreter at a safty meeting or badging in time? Three...Perini IS the biggest, arrogant-******* contractor in the country. Skanska, Taylor, Penta, ect. don't even have a record comparable. Palazzo huge project, one accedental death.Coose your contractor wisely if able. Oh, another thing..the 8 deaths are on sight, not injured and passed away at the hospital. Try 21.

There's safety and then there's safety, know what I mean? The guys doing the work know.

I was a field construction boilermaker for 35 years; went through the apprenticeship and worked as a rigger, welder and mechanic; later as steward, foreman, general foreman and senior general foreman. I always worked out of the hall and never took a steady job. After retirement at 55 I went to work once in awhile as a safety consultant and have worked for several major contractors in refineries, nuclear plants and fossil plants.

Anyway when it's time to get it done safety often takes a holiday. The safety man stops coming around or he doesn't see things that are out in plain sight. Management will pay lip service to safety but encourage the job be done faster rather than safer. Like I said, this is no news to the guys doing the work.

I've seen companies that ran safe jobs in areas with very strong unions run dangerous jobs in areas where unions are weaker.

And it doesn't help that the average safety guy is a feckless and callow youth who knows absolutely nothing about the work but everything about the rules and wouldn't recognize disaster if he were staring it in the face. As was said of the French Bourbons---they remembered everything and learned nothing.

Not that I know what's going on in Vegas but I thought my general observations might be of some value here.

Regarding substance abuse: Nationwide Survey Shows Most Illicit Drug Users and Heavy Alcohol Users Are in the Workplace and May Pose Special Problems By the way, with @5000 workers at 15% this would = 750 workers using illegal drugs at City Center. Amazing more haven't been killed.
