I am moving to Vegas in 3 months from Michigan. I have an associates degree (which I know isn't much) in Business, but I am actually looking to be a cocktail waitress. I obviously know that I will need experience in this field before I can get to a larger casino. Does anyone know if there are a lot of cocktail waitress positions either in the clubs or casinos? I am cute, young girl that is hardworking, responsible, and honest that just doesn't think there are any opportunities for me in Michigan any longer. Do you like vegas? If I can't get a job as a cocktail waitress right away...do you think I could find one at at least like Denny's, Walgreens, or anywhere? Are there a lot of jobs?

Where in Mi are you coming from? I just moved here from MI too.

I have been here since August and I just landed my first job as a bartender out here. Competition is tough but if you are motivated to find a job, you will. Don't let anyone tell you different. You will however need at least 3 months living expenses saved up because the hiring process here is slow. If you don't have any cocktail waitress experience, I would start with a local restaurant. (That's how I did it ;-) There are plenty ranging from corps like Chili's to Mom and Pop shops. Then you can try to scoot into one of the casino's or nightclubs.

Good Luck to you.

This post is spot on!!! You will need at least 3 months because of how tight and competitive it is; however, there are jobs available. Currently, there is an ad in todays R-J for servers at T.G.I. Fridays for the new Aliante Station casino as well as a job fair on Oct 6,7,8 for the Camacho's Cantina.

The best advice is be persistent, things open up very quickly since it is a transient town.

Anyone can get a job at Dennys and probably Walgreens. Especially if you are not ugly.

From what I've gathered, the TGI Fridays positions are rather competitive. I was recently on an interview there and it seemed as though they're looking to re-vamp their image. I went for the bartender position and as soon as they asked me if I did flair (my answer being, no) the interview simmered down. I was scoring points for personality, but my back-flip skills obviously need some work. All in all, it is important to not get discouraged when dealing with this sort of thing.

I'm also from Michigan and acapr220's boyfriend. We both came out here with the notion that the job market, much like the rest of the country, was going to be tough. I will say that things here are ALOT more professional pertaining to the service industry. It isn't like it is at home where you have a single interview and that is what the employer is using to determine if you've landed the job or not. You can expect up to three interviews from some places.

Savings are an important thing to have when making a big move across country to tide you over until you land a job. Take what you can get when you get it, it might not be the job you're after, but it most certainly will be motivation (and income), to get you headed towards the job you want.

Some other things to consider when you come out here before you start your job search: You'll need TAM and Health cards. These will cost you somewhere in the ballpark of $80 total. The sheriff's card (needed if you're working in a place that has gaming) is a whole other story. Being that Vegas is a transient town it would be wise to get a local number before you start handing out resumes.

Most of the jobs in the casinos have applications you fill out on line. Don't get discouraged if you don't hear back from these places right away. Most casinos on the strip get an exponential amount of applicants to sift through on a weekly basis.

In short, you will need; savings, patience and a positive attitude to make things work out here.

Have your 3 months cost-of-living saved up, move out here, land a job in Denny's or a small restaurant or bar - they are everywhere. Immediately join Culinary Union for cocktail waitress job since there is a waiting list and then a series of "temp" jobs you have to go through. This way you have one stead joby while you ease into something more profitable and stable.

I am really shocked to learn that about TGI Fridays. I didn't know they did the backflip thing. I was at the one by the strip and it sure didn't look like there was any "flair" going on there. Hmmm. Maybe they are trying to change their image.

yeh, those kinds of places are trying to change their image, have you looked at Ruby Tuesday lately? They've been changing their image from the dark bar restaurant to the bright bar restaurant that has an amazing selection of beverages and artisan food...i think Applebee's is trying to go the same route too...
